Double Bass DPA 4099 placement

That's clearly their suggested placement, but here's someone who decided to go with the ATM350 because he didn't like the limitation of that mic clip:

You can actually buy a spring clamp type clip: DPA CM4099 Instrument Microphone Clamp Mount

I just got a used DPA 4099 and it didn't come with a clip for bass so I'm trying this type of clip first.

They end up using it here:
Choosing the Best Mic for Upright Bass – with Sound Samples - inSync

Since I didn't have the right clip for it, I found a rattle free way of mounting it in the bridge heart so I could mess around with it.

It is on a gooseneck so it doesn't HAVE to be placed as in the picture. Personally I'm feeling like I might want a little more proximity to the f hole but it's early days, which is why I was curious to hear what other people were doing. Thanks to all who replied!

I’m an AMT guy for just this reason. I can move the mic and get so many colors and possibilities.

With the newer DPA 4099B Devote there is a gooseneck extension you can purchase that extends the gooseneck’s length. If you wish to purchase a replacement for the rubber mount they are available for $75.00 or so. It’s worth the investment. IME the closer I moved the older DPA 4099B to the f hole the worse it sounded. Just my take however.

It does want to feedback more as you move it towards the f hole. I’ve definitely noticed that along with more proximity effect. As mentioned above, I’ll be getting the clamp mount instead of the rubber Batman looking mount partly because those were out of stock but also because I can try and moving it around to different places. I still have one of the original generation ATM 35s. I think it was called the artist model. With a little spring clamp on that thing you could really only mount it on one of the adjusters, and it was always in danger of falling off so I ended up doing surgery on a gooseneck stand light, and making something more useful. I got my DPA used for 450 and it came with a guitar mount and a horn mount and I’ve already sold the horn mount for 25 bucks and yet I’m still feeling a little like sheesh that’s a lot of money for a clip microphone. Still, I’ve heard people sound great with it and it’s fun to mess around with a new toy.

When the DPA 4099B was otiginally released only the Violin and Guitar Mounts were released. It took close to 6 Months for the bass Horn, Cello, and Double Bass clips were available. I owned ATM 35 when it was originally released. It was a very welcomed small capsule condenser at the time, that said it’s more susceptible to feedback than the DPA 4099 B and at least on my bass and didn’t have a clip mount that is too short and mutes the bridge.

Do you have the model that mounts on the tailpiece? Also, are you ever blending it with a pickup and going through an amp onstage? If so, how has that been for you?

Thanks,
Adam

For a short while I blended the DPA 4099B with a Realist or Ehrlund EAP. I didn’t hear a huge difference between blending the two and the EAP soloed. I placed the mic between the feet of the bridge, close to the top as the original gooseneck would allow. I sold my DPA 4099B several years ago and purchased a set of Remic DB 5400’s They are easier to mount and remove. Remics have a warmer and more detailed sound and timbre than the DPA 4099. The DPA has better feedback rejection. I use a Grace Felix onstage into a powered MAS 1/8 or 4x5.5. The pickup (now Realist Lifeline) goes to the amp and the Remic DB 5400LB goes out to the house.
