Double Bass DPA 4099 vs AMT SP25B

i ordered mine from dpa directly, but you could just as easily go to some resource like sweetwater.

jeff.

im very sorry to DO this, but i just went through the thread again and im having trouble finding out how to order one. i could swear i had read a post with an email to use to put an order in, but i cant find it now.

i also went to the website but they just have a distributor list and that doesnt help me where im located.

help!

First off, that was a seriously long thread to read in one sitting , but was well worth it.

I'm thinking about picking up a 4099, but have two questions:

1. I've got a recording session coming up with a chamber orchestra where a lot of micing will be happening. Seems like a good enough excuse to pick up my own mic for bass. I don't know all the specifics of the recording setup, be we'll all be playing together. The engineer doesn't want to take a direct signal from a bass pickup nor from my Contra because it'd lose the character of the room. Knowing that the 4099 is reportedly exceptional at rejecting surrounding sound sources, do you think it'd still be a good choice for this type of session? Will it pick up any of the hall's (church) characteristics? Hope I explained that properly.

2. For home practice and chamber orch. performances (where I'm the only bass and need to amplify), would this chain work properly: 4099--->phantom pwr source--->xlr cable--->xlr to 1/4" adapter--->original contra? Hey, I'd love to use this as another excuse to pick up a new contra (or the Coda+...kills me to think about it), but that's just not going to happen. At any rate, any issues you can see with this method of feeding into the Contra?

To answer your first question, it most likely will not pick up any characteristics of the room. The range on the mic is very narrow, and so the sound can change very drastically when moving it to different spots along the instrument. It truly is a mini-shotgun mic.

I'm not totally positive about the second question but I think that would work just fine.

Thanks man. For now, I may just let the engineer come up with the setup and I'll keep the 4099 on the horizon for now. Maybe when I can actually afford it and the Coda+ at the same time...

Need gigging-reviews!!! Is it still good....now when the worst hype calmed down?

I have one but cant realy review it yet. Need more time with it but i can say that i havent got the sound i like. Hollow, boomy, screzzy, to much midrang...Trying to eq and searching for the sweetspot with no luck yet. This is in my boomy livingroom, no gigging-experiment.

I know this has turned into a DPA thread and not so much about the AMT. But I have a decent protools set up at home and find the AMT provides a great sound for recording purposes but does not add to much for all the hassle playing live. I am lucky to be pleased with my bass/pickup/amp sound....

On the other side of that running my planet wing pickup into the EA doubler and VL208 provide a more then pleasing tone when playing live and listening back to that sound by itself through protools is not very good. That signal that sounds great reinforcing my acoustic sound does not carry through on tape...

I don't have any experience with the DPA but in regards to my AMT mic in the rare case that I am running a signal to a house mix I bring along the AMT as opposed to running a DI from my head. I'm not a session musician so any recordings I'm doing is purely to listen back and improve my playing. And with that it's rare that my jazz quartet needs PA support.

From a pure mic stand point I can get a better recorded signal from my AKG C414 and from a few Neumanns I've borrowed. That doesn't help much if your not isolated so a small condensor like the AMT is helpful in situations where you are not isolated from others.

I don't have close to the experience that many posting in this thread do but from what I've tried the issues with using a mic live through an amp well out weigh any benefits I've been able to experience..

Hello All,

I actually ordered a BC 4099 Bass Clip directly from DPA today. After taking a look at the mount and talking with a wise TB guru. I'm tired of fooling with workarounds for the violin clip that just won't quite get where I want it to go, close mind you, but no cigar, so I'll compromise by mounting it in the after length because, geez, this mic is so light that it's essentially the same as using the vibramute that's already on my bass. I love the sound of this mic into a recording console or FOH.

Ric

what are they charging for the clip?

Ric yes please post your results. I am not sure whether to try the guitar / violin clip or the DB clip.

Like you, I'm sure the muting effect on the afterlengths won't be any different than the Vibramute. (Which BTW I've set aside since I switched to Garbos). But I want to be able to reach the spot between the tops of the F-holes. And I am not sure I can reach it with the "B" mount.

Actually, maybe you and I just want the head of the mic in slightly different spots ... I get my best results between the end of the FB and the bridge, not around the bridge feet.

Thinking of ordering a 4099 B.

What's the consensus on the DAD4099 XLR connector w/ the flow frequency roll off (hpf)?

Better to order with or without it?

thnx

Steve,
Take a look at this from the DPA website. Looks like the exact spot you're aiming for and that's right where I have the AMT.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

So can you order the 4099B w/ bass clip & phantom power unit without the DAD4099 XLR connector?

Do they have a specific product # for this option or is it a special order?

You can get either the DAD 4099 XLR ( low cut version) or the DAD 6001 BC XLR. (flat response version). Although, DPA makes a number of phantom power supplies they are not included in the cost of the 4099 mic, mounting clip adaptor package price.

Thnx much Ric.

I know guys like the Headway pre, but anyone running the 4099 w/o a pre right into a AI Focus or Clarus w/ its' phantom power?

This thing looks like a promising pre w/o a huge price tag;

Can be run straight into the Clarus, especially a two channel with the second channel for the blended pickup, but the Headway is a lot more effective in killing the feedback.

When I bought my DPA, the UK distributor recommended the low cut adaptor (perhaps that's all they had in stock?? - no, surely not) on the basis that the low cut compensates for the proximity effect. I am very happy with this. It's mids and highs I like to get through the mic with the lows coming via the pickup.

Ric, thanks. Yeah I've seen the pic on the web site. Maybe I am missing something, but if the gooseneck is 5.5 inches long, then I just don't see how it will reach that spot on my bass, between the tops of the F-holes, unless the clip is way up the afterlengths just under the bridge. Not sure I want that. I've tried to measure it on my bass.

I'll just have to buy one and check it out I guess. I liked the pics Vunz posted. He has the violin clip. But do please post your findings too.

Steve -

I checked and my bass mount can easily reach in between the top of my f-holes. I have to put the bass mount about halfway up the after lengths to reach that high.
