Double Bass DPA 4099 vs AMT SP25B

k, so according to their specs, the mic is flat at 20cm/8in ... so the closer you get, the more the bass boost from the proximity effect.

at the end of the day, it's about what sounds good, but it is interesting how our ears are so accustomed to a righteous bass boost.

On my bass the sweet spot tends to be just north of the bridge between the bridge feet and 'f' hole.

Which mount might be best for this position? Could it reach this area from the tailpiece?

That's a good question! But the HPF version laks bottom, even in that close micing, I think. So the proximity effect doesn't give back the lost bottom to the stock adapter. With the flat adapter, I hear the bass boost on the record, just I wanted to simulate a live situation where need to mic close, to avoid the too mutch bleed, and we liked it' sound. Of course, It's a different question, how mutch feedback to couse in a boomy stage.

To get to that spot on the instrument (exactly where I put mine) you would need to use the guitar mount it's not ideal but unless you want to use the violin mount on the bridge which doesn't work on all bridges (mine) then the guitar mount is better I think.

Im really interested in the DPA but only when they will make a Double Bass version, honestly either mounting versions just dont do it for me, here's 2 pictures showing how i mount my little Audix (the goose neck mount is from my Audio Technica 35, i bought the Audix on ebay without the mount and i never had an answer from the Audix customer service:rollno:) but it works great, at the end of the cable i have a mounting sistem similar to the Schertler Stat B, it works great and takes me a minute to change the mike from bass to bass, in fact i always travel with this little mike and had played many shows just with it.
So, i have great expectations for the DPA.

Really. Suppose we could morph something onto the mic that they aren't smart enough to do yet?

Can anybody take a pic of the mic without the mount?

there's lots of dpa porn in the manual, which is downloadable Invalid Link Removed.

played out with the little sucker tonight, and unless you do something really stupid, like feed the mic into the monitors, and if you use some degree of thought placing your amp, the the thing just plain works ... neutral and feedback-free. for this particular gig i was positive i'd need to mix some pickup in with the mic to hear myself through the amp, but ... no need, just mic, and what a joy that is.

yes, you can obsess about placement, and tweak to your hearts content, but keep in mind that out of the box it sounds better than any other option i've ever experienced. it's not cheap, but damned if it doesn't work! and come to think of it, compared to the rest of the mics they make, it is a bargain.

... unless you have an amp with the same characteristics and of the same quality a a decent stage monitor, as I do. I've been gigging with a mic only (both with and without my own amplification) for years now, so it can definitely be done. And I suspect the DPA will make this even easier for me.

I spent some time using zip ties to organize and secure it. I'd have to re-do everything to take mine off and show you.

Imagine the mic on top of the long, skinny goosneck attatched to the cable. None of the plastic parts on it.
Remember that the XLR on the end comes off, so you can thread the cable through tight areas if you need to.

Since the Violin mount won't get the mic where I want to use it I'm on the lookout for some small diameter flexible mic conduit that you can just order by length. Bob Bransetter built his own mic mount for the AMT maybe he can help us out here. My bridge is to narrow for the violin clip. I sure love the sound of the mic, but I want it in a place where it can stay on the bass.

I have some photos of Bob's TP mount on a hardrive somewhere. I'll fish them out. Good idea.

How long is the gooseneck from mic to where the wire comes out without a bracket?

My iAmp 800 Combo actually works well in that capacity, as long as I can get enough distance between it and the bass.

Oddly enough, the AMT, straight into my old AI Contra, also works very well.

Whoops.... actually it goes through a Raven Labs blender first.

Just remembered that I had those photos of Bob's Tailpiece Mount. Searched the hardrive and voila' here they are. The DPA is @5" without the Violin or Guitar Adaptor.

PS: The J Pegs wouldn't upload. Don't know why. I'll email em to you

5" won't cut it without some kind of extension. Need more than twice that or at best you are putting the element just south of most bridges, and with the AMT style mount of Bob's it would mic up the area just under the string balls very nicely.

If it sounded good there it would be sorta cool cause you couldn't see it.

Anybody wanna try that and see how it sounds?
