Double Bass DPA 4099 vs AMT SP25B

The audible effect might be more apparent if you bow as the weight will almost act like a mute. Maybe you can try and let us know? Is that the original guitar mount?

I know, that is why I first checked it with the bow. A large part of my playing consists of improvised arco playing, so arco sound is very important to me. The mic plus mount only weights in about 36 grams, and it does not influence the sound, either bowed or plucked. I always find that a mute does not so much influence the sound of pizz playing, but does have a profound influence on the feel of the instrument while playing pizz. Bowed, of course, is a totally different story. That is why I first used the bow in order to check the eventual damping effects of the mic.

Oh, and as I mentioned in a previous post, this is the violin mount.

Cheers,
Vincent

I've taken the plunge, on the basis of all the good things posted here, and ordered DPA4099. I'm particularly attracted to this mic because, I hope, it will be reasonably feedback resistant so I can use it with backline probably blended with a bit of pickup. But from the clips posted here the sound seems great. Lowest price I can find in UK is £423 ($680) delivered. I have ordered the guitar mount because, from studying the DPA stuff online it appears to be the same as the violin mount only wider. It will still squeeze down to the same dimension as the violin so will initially, I hope, give me more to play with in finding the best placement. Then I may decide to cut off any surplus.

The only thing that niggles me a bit is when I ordered the mic I said to the guy that I wanted the DAD 6001 adaptor (to give me a flat response). To which he replied that it comes standard with the 6001 which is the low cut filter. To which we had a fruitless 'no it isn't yes it is' exchange that went on for quite a time. I'll have to see what I get when it arrives and will keep you all posted.

Thanks to all who posted on this topic, including pics and clips. TB is a great resource.

You mean, he replied that it comes standard with DAD 4099?
Unfortunately, can't choose the 6001 as an option when order, as far as I know. I don't want to pay more than $100 for the flat adapter, but very easy the cancel the low cut in the DAD 4099 by a technician.

I contacted the Dutch distributer for DPA, and he pointed me towards a shop that carries DPA (aptly called De Herrieboerderij - "The Noise Farm", which mainly serves audio-for-film people. They told me that the 4099 is very popular with those guys, since it is the smallest shotgun mike in the world). The distributer also told me that the DAD4099 can be swapped, without extra costs, for one without the low cut filter, which the shop indeed did. I guess that is the advantage of not shopping online...

BTW: curiously, my xlr adapter is also called a DAD 4099, and looks exactly the same as the stock one, apart from not having the "low cut sign" on it. When I disassembled the adapter, I noticed that the circuit board had "DAD6001" printed on it, so apparently it is a 6001, but dressed as a 4099, in order to assure uniformity in appearance.

This is starting to sound inevitable. Where/how did you end up mounting the violin version? i suspect that I'd be able to find a non-intrusive spot on my bridge or afterlength for this, but curious what you ended up doing.

chris,
since you have the H clamp id just mount it the way that i show in my pictures. its stable, no screwing with the clamp to get it to stay, no attaching it to vibrating parts of the bass so that it can either mute or pickup unwanted noise, you can reach any spot on the bass you want to mic, and you can swap from bass to bass in seconds.

vincent,

you win the shrimp cocktail for this rig ... works perfectly! i do think that the success of working in this spot will vary from bridge to bridge, but it works great for me.

dpa should send you a t-shirt or something, 'cause you're gonna be selling a lot of 4099s.

jeff.

Invalid Link Removed is the way I mount the mic. It has no audible effects on the sound of the bass.

Cheers,
Vincent

i bought one of these bad boys a couple of weeks ago- had been staying up too late reading all the good reviews on 'em and relented...

i had to sell my DYN-B to part fund it, was gutted because ive really always wanted to love the DYN, but it wasnt always right for me. it did sound great blended with a Realist though, and that would be a strong recomendation for it. Reid Anderson played here the other day with that combo and said as much.

the DPA- well, three gigs in its been pretty dang good. two gigs without drums, it was amazing and both bands commented on the sound that night. the one with drums, was ok but i really had to blend in a lot more realist than mic to get a workable volume from the amp. if i was just going into a PA im sure it wouldnt have been a problem.

its really worth spending some time moving the thing about trying to find the sweet spot on your bass, dont push it too hard or it'll growl at you, and it really does work best with the Realist blended in.
wait a minute, wasnt that the deal with the DYN-B....

G Cordez,

I'll finally get to play out with mine this weekend. What I love about this mic is that switching between the bow and pizz just isn't an issue any more. To me at least, the 4099 is a whole new ball game in instrument amplification. In larger groups the room usually dictates using the Realist alongside the mic. This mic is a major breakthrough in bass amplification. IMHO we are at a new stage in bass mics.

yeah, im pretty hopeful for this mic too. ive had the best success in the quieter, small gigs. it just sounds amazing, will have to probably blend in the Realist for most of the stuff i do though, just dont like having on under my bridge foot.

how did you get on with it over the weekend?

heres a couple of photos of how im using it, trying to be discreet with the cabling etc. i used a black cable tie and snipped the after length off so its not noticable at all. i like how it dosent take over the bass...

The DPA makes it so easy to switch between the bow and pizz, because their isn't any difference (or very minimal difference) between the two. especially since I use Spirocores, you don't really have to change the EQ to use the bow, to me that's pretty amazing! Bowing Sounds so good! I wish I'd have had this mic when I did my senior recital centuries ago. When I A/B'd it with the sound of the AMT there is a big difference. I'll be in the studio this weekend, maybe I can con the engineer into letting me use it for the track we are recording.
