Double Bass DPA 4099B

I know this mic has been talked about substantially but I know there are still some people out there who are on the fence. Here's the thing, if you're thinking about it, it's cause you're frustrated with your sound and you play, at least sometimes, in situations that are conducive to micing. Don't think about it anymore. I can't believe it took me this long to pick this puppy up. I play in a Tango fusion chamber group and I spent years trying to balance my wilson pickup with whatever mic the sound guy had. What a disaster. Immobility was an issue, feedback, etc. The worse part is when they set the mic up but don't use it and just take the feed from my wilson because it makes life easier for them. You spend your whole life shedding so that everything you work for could be put in the hands of some random dude who gave the promoter the most competitive price. This mic isn't going to change that entirely but the more we can control on our end, the better the chances of getting a good sound. Besides, I can move!

In most cases, with the DPA I could leave the amp in my car. In some cases I use my Wilson and GK combo on stage and shoot the dpa out to the house. BTW, I use the Wilson because I like to hear all my notes. I don't like the fact that there's something drilled into my bridge but since I play quite a bit of Arco, it's what works best for me.

I happened to be an early adopter of the 4099 even before they had the rubber tailpiece adaptor that makes it a "4099 B". It works incredibly well as a FOH mic.

This is the life we lead. The mic will feed back, but it has superior of axis rejection. I did not find the 4099 particularly well suited for use with a bass amplifier, but my amp doesn't provide phantom power and I'm not into carrying extra little boxes around anymore.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case for me since 50% of the gigs I play are without P.A. support. Others have found great success using a QSC K10 powered speaker elevated on a stand for these situations. So, on my gigs, the DPA only comes out when the P.A. is there.
