Dr. Bass 1580 vs. AccuGroove Tri115L

To The Gent With The 2260......

As on the Dr. Bass website, the most popular combo is a 2460 & a BL115.

I will not hesitate to suggest this setup. I'm using this combo in Worship and make a LOUD joyful noise to the Lord.

My rig sounds so good that they don't even bother running me thru the mains anymore.

In fact, I just added a second BL115 on the other side of the stage to even things out!

The BL1580 has plenty of low end! You can easily dial in a little "old school" tone my dialing out the tweeter and the 8 using the dual attenuators.
It sounds plenty big and warm but still nice and tight.
Just my $.02.

Just read your 1x15 shootout which I thought was excellent as always. I know that you are being as objective as possible and it shows in your review, but at the finish did you have a pecking order or even just a preference of one cab that you would reach for first when going out for a gig where a 1x15 was needed?

Thank you for your kind words! Well, to be honest, no, I don't really establish a 'pecking order', but I will say a few things. My HT115's get more use than any other 1x15's, but in part because of my familiarity with them. I have matching 4x10's for both the Orange and older Trace Elliot cabs, and I'm likely to use them in conjunction with the 4x10's, but those two cabs (the Orange and the 1503) REALLY impressed me during the shootout. That Glock Tedd would probably get my knod for a single stand alone 1x15, though. But by that same token, the Tri 115L is a great compliment to the Whappo, Jr., the Epi would go great with a UL-310, the Ashdown Mini stack is a killer little rig, and the Skjold/Dr. Bass cab can stand on its own quite well, too.

So, long story short, they've all got their place. :D

Mine does! Sub-woofery, but in a good way. Not flabby. Quick response. I feel that I can play with a very light touch with the 1580. The notes "bloom", especially at loud(er) volumes.

With the mid and tweeter, the cab can get very honky, too. I like a little "honk" in my tone as I feel the honk sort of gets swallowed up on stage. And by the time the tone gets to the audience, the honk turns into growl.

A few weeks ago I had, for whatever reason, a harder callous (sp?) on my first finger than on my second finger. My two fingers were getting such two different tones out of the 1580! It was driving me nuts!! I could not, for the life of me, get my two fingers to sound the same. Point of story: These three-way cabs can be very revealing.

Just received mine two days ago, and here are my initial thoughts:

I work at a music shop in Lawrence, KS, and we were all impressed with this cab. First of all because it is so light weight! I got the NEO drivers, and thing can't weigh more than 54 or 55 pounds.

As far as the sound goes . . . MAN the low end is TIGHT so FAT!! The low mids are some of the best I've heard. Bouncing around on the A string just sounds so sweet now. The 8" really adds a lot of touch and punch to the sound. I have it hooked up with an Ampeg SVT3Pro.

Besides the shipping, which took 5 business days, I'm totally diggin' this cab.

My 1580 with the upgraded Beyma G40 speaker arrived on Monday...

I'll give you guys the bad news first:
There was a ding in the top of the cabinet where the plywood had separated a bit, and where the spray on coating had missed, along with another spot on the side where the coating missed...

The good news:
Marc called me on called me personally on New Year's Eve to talk to me about the problem and has offered to rebuild the cabinet, or offer me a $100 credit on future purchases. I have decided to send the cabinet back to be rebuilt at no extra cost except for shipping. Kudos for this...

Also, this cabinet simply "Kicks Ass!!!" My rig is an A-designs REDDI into a Carvin DCM1500. My 6 string bass is strung with a .195 tuned to E0 (1 octave below standard electric bass) to F... and lemme tell you that I have never heard an E0 so clear in my life... It literally sounds like a grand piano... That Beyma G40 speaker, which took forever to arrive, absolutely doesn't flinch when pushed... In comparison, the AG El Whappo Jr. that I had owned previously, while it was a nice cabinet, it sounded to flat for me, and lacked sizzle, or at least the option for it...

I have been waiting for about 2 months for this cabinet, and it's sad that I need to send it back for repair, but in the end the wait will be completely worth is for "total tonal bliss"... I know that this cabinet will be my "be all, end all" cabinet, unless my band starts playing stadiums... Then I'll just have to order more...

So, to put it lightly, I have been stung by Dr. Bass, and it feels and sounds great!!!

Man, those li'l 1260's kick some arse! Never had the pleasure of trying an Accugroove cab, but I can't imagine you won't like the three-way Dr. Bass cabs.

The good doctor has a good thing goin' on. Fer Sher.

So the 1580 just came back last night... :hyper: I was a bit worried as the box had a huge gash in the side, and was missing a chunk of packing foam... :hmm:

DHL Sucks! Interesting that the box had all these "Fragile, Handle with Care" stickers on it... :hmm::hmm::hmm: I'll post pics when I have a chance...

To my surprise the cabinet seemed to have arrived in good condition, except that one of the plastic corners was cracked... This is not to knock Dr. Bass, but DHL probably dropped the box a few times, enough to bottom out the foam and to crack one of the corners... I'll have to bug Chuck and Marc to send me some corners after they get back from NAMM. :help:

Anyways, the finish on the cabinet is pretty much perfect... They even sent me extra casters... I will hook everything back up Saturday afternoon to give it a whirl... Wish me luck...

I recently learned of a situation of a 410 size cabinet being shipped from the Midwest to the Pacific NW, marginally packed by someone who knows better (they're an enclosure mfr among other things) and the cabinet suffered damage to the carpet and multiple dents to the grille during its journey. In that situation, I can understand damage from dropping, but punctures in the shipping container are simply unacceptable.

There's a seller on eBay that appears to clean out the Musician's Friend outlet store and sell broken instruments as fixer-uppers. I wonder how common it is for instruments and cabinets to be damaged in transit? Has anyone on TalkBass who is associated with a mfr or dealer ever commented on this?

Re DHL, I heard a bam on my front door. Went to see what it was and the DHL guy threw my package down my sidewalk 30-40' and hit the front door. He knew I was home because the garage was open.

I wasn't home at the time.
My neighbor told me the DHL girl seemed angry because she wouldn't sign the delivery slip for her, so she was throwing the boxes around to get them back in the truck!
