DR Sunbeams

I just changed my stings to Dr Sunbeams. I can't say they sound any better than the EB Slinkys I took off, but they are new so I'll have to give them time to settle. I've been a die hard Slinky user, and have tried most of the other DR strings, but always ended back with the Slinky. There just something about them when they mellow. I will say the Sunbeams feel very smooth, and I'll have to get use to the 125 B sting where as the Slinky has a 135 B. Can anyone tell me about the sound when the Sunbeams mellow?

I personally use the Sunbeams for the tone I get when they mellow. I'm not the greatest fan of them new (but then again, I'm not much of a fan of any new tone on any string).

To me, the Sunbeams carry a nice round and punchy tone when they mellow that just seems to fit for me- both fingerstyle and with a pick. They've got a smooth attack, a nice punch, even tonal response, and overall roundness that is slightly akin to a flatwound, but with more roundwound character. And they still maintain a little bit of snarl or bark that you get with a standard roundwound.

Just threw some 45-130 Sunbeams on my Cirrus. LOVE THEM! They replaced a set of D'Adarrio nickel rounds. Night and day improvement. And these are actually long enough to string through the body. I'm happy all around. Nice tension, great tone, and a pretty smooth feel for non-coated rounds.

THE strings for fretless. Incredibly warm and articulate, mwah for days, perfectly responsive to glissando and vibrato technique. I still prefer a stainless set on my fretted basses, but I can easily see how others adopt the Sunbeams for fretted as well. Great strings, you can't go wrong here.

I've got chromes on Cirrus and am thinking about changing to Sunbeams. Do you get any growl with the Sunbeams? My Chromes are too polite.

Someone else mentioned being addicted to Slinkies. I was as well, then decided on trying Sun Beams. They're on my Musicman Sterling HH...can't say I'll ever go back to Slinkies. These are more full sounding across the entire spectrum and have a sparkle in the highs, and it's not brittle at all. So crisp and so clear...can't think of trying any other strings anytime soon.

After four months with my first set of Sunbeams, I have been very pleased with them and have decided to stick with them. I previously used EXL170's exclusively for about 15 years.

In terms of settling in and mellowing out, I preferred the sound of sunbeams after about 10 days. After 4 months, the B and E strings have finally lost their clarity, but the C and G have retained their tone fairly well.

I've rejoined the DR Sunbeams club. I use the .40-.100 set. I just put them back on my Peavey Millenium, and my Jazz fretless with DiMarzio Model J's will be getting them next. When I want the roundwound sound, Sunbeams are my string. The search for my favorite roundwound is over! :bassist:

Yeah, I can get some growl out of them. I just set my gain a little hot on the pre-amp and dig in. If I back the gain off a hair they're nice and clean with great clarity.

I played in a big open jam last night. There were 6 bassists that were taking turns rotating through. Every one of the other bassists were complimenting my tone. We were all playing through the same Ampeg SVT and Ampeg 410 rig.
