Its interesting because transferring song tabs from drop tunings to BEADG has really helped me learn notes because I got sick of rewriting tabs. Its also forced me to start using my ear because I end up getting sick of rewriting tabs.
The other upside with using a 5 in this case is that if its heavier rock, you're not going to have that open string to rely on. You're really going to need to learn how to use all your fingers on the left hand, and your technique as a whole needs to be tighter to pull it off.
Its actually influenced my technique to the point where if I don't absolutely NEED to play a song with an open string, I don't. I've found songs like Master of Puppets even easier by playing the open E note as the 5th fret on the B and when the main riff shifts up to the F#, I play the 7th fret and its the exact same pattern.
Don't let the guy before tell you its lazy to remap a drop tuned song to a 5er. It can be potentially more difficult than playing it in D or C or whatever the band does, but you'll find your string muting, string switching, and dexterity all improving.
Unless you try "This is Not an Exit" by Anthrax in BEADG. Expect some pain from that one.
