Drugs!

As for your wife, is she the pope? Does it matter? Would she lock you under the stairs if your drummer did enjoy his "mexican marijuana"?

Wow, you're really on a troll-roll today, aren't you pal? :P

Come on, dude. Is the concept of getting along with your significant other in peace and harmony so alien to you? Or do you prefer to simply tie your girlfriend up in a sack and beat it with a cudgel when she objects to things?

I kid, but seriously dude - any man who does not value harmony and happiness in marriage, shouldn't have gotten married. And probably shouldn't be allowed to date, either.

It's a lifestyle until a lifestlye change (choice to, or not to) occurs by individuals themselves. IMO, you're likely not going to reform, or change any of them.

It's surprising how many 'dry & sober' bands are out there-where some or all of the band members were serious party mongers in their youth/years past.

First off, I stated plainly that I have no such objections to controlled casual drug use as I drink myself. I would not be in a band with someone who cheated on his wife, because I regard such behavior as disgusting. Didn't love Jesus? Don't much care. Gay? Depends on the person. Seems to me your beef is if I don't like something that you have no problem with I am a self righteous moral jackoff. That's not hypocritcal. Not at all.

Frankly if someone doesn't want to be in a band with homosexuals, athiests, Religious types, minorities, people who wear green socks, whatever, I don't really care, it's their right to associate with whomever they choose. Criticizing them for that belief is the same as criticizing someone for being any of those things.

Lets just say that is my point (it isnt btw), then what youre saying is that its just as OK to refuse to work with someone because they are black as it is to refuse to work with someone because they are in the KKK? Come on man!

That's only saying pot is a drug. It's classified as a drug, but it's the only "drug" you do not need to do anything to. It grows as a plant, it has less side effects then alcohol and tobacco. Pot is not a drug. It was made illegal because the 3m corporation thought of hemp as a threat to their business.

Yeah, dude. like i'm sooo with you bro..down with government and stuff like that.

Anyhow, if it does NOT affect performance or responsibilites it's their life. I've seen however, a small little 'thing' grow into a ragin' addiction. Just be careful and under no circumstance let them borrow money for ANYTHING.

And yes, you will be taken more seriously if you act professional.
A pimp once said, "I wear the nicest clothes not because I have a million bucks, but so that I have the oppurtunity to attract a million bucks.."

I am saying that very thing, although a better comparison would be black panthers to the KKK. It's your choice whether I agree with it or not and as long as it causes no harm to the person you refuse to work with, then so be it. What good would it do for a black man to be in a band with a guy who secretly hates black people? How could the forced "tolerance" there actually work? Let the black guy play with people who like him and let the black person hater go join some crappy nazi skinhead band no one would listen to anyway.

Funny you called me the moralist and you're proposed situation deals with moral equivalence.

Gonna keep it short.

2 members of band drink smoke weed.
I said continue but along as its on their time not band time.
One is emotionally vulnerable and I'm not sure how he reacts to pressure.
I'm afraid if we play a bar he gets drunk and ****s it up well lose credibility. Ive read that we should treat it like a job if were serious about it. And they always argue to me about that everyone does it. I always use the argument u don't show up to a job drunk.

Anyway

Any suggestions on how to keep then sober no real problems yet.
What's your rule on this kinda stuff? Allow it at all? Experiences with it at shows?

Thank ya peeps

Your poor grasp of grammar will probably lose you more gigs than your bandmates drinking or smoking herb.

I disagree. Some people have a moral aversion to drug/alcohol use. Many tolerate it becasue they don't want to deal with the grief they'll get for it from everyone else. Now I am not one of those people, but I would not be in a band with a drug addict no matter how he showed up at practices. I don't like drug addicts. If you don't want to work with people who use drugs, that's fine in and of itself.

Someone with a moral aversion to drug or alcohol use should not play in a band with people who smoke or drink in the first place.
I smoke and I drink. I have for a long time and as long as I dont overdue it, which I learned not to do a long time ago, my ability is not negatively affected.
My bandmates also smoke and drink, and I hold the same view towards them. So long as they dont get to a point where they cannot handle themselves on stage they are free to do what they please.

And using at gigs is right out in my books... because once we got thrown out of a place right after our soundcheck, when the drummer was caught blazing in the can.

Well c'mon. I dont mind my bandmates blazing at gigs, but have the brain capacity to not get you and yours busted. I mean, toking in the restroom? Thats beyond idiocy! Take it outside, to the car, the adjacent parking lot, whatever, but not inside the club!

Now Im completely cornfused!

I guess all Im saying is that the moral issues are not important if the person in question is getting the job done. IMHO, IME yada yada yada.

If one of my bandmates did something that I considered morally objectionable then I would try to help him out but I wouldnt consider quitting or kicking him out.

Marijuana = ilegal = problems with the law = No, thank you.

To me is simple, I only need to think how I can explain to my wife and kids that Jim the drummer plays way better after smoking two big joints of Mexican mariguana.

Its practically legal here in Ca, and is legal for a large percentage of Californians who have obtained state specified licenses to do so. Standing on my feet with a heavy bass slung around me gets tiring and is killer on my back. Good thing I have a prescription for that.

This was my whole point. Sorry if that got out of hand, I just have an issue with someone's moral choices being catagorically described as self righteous, even though I don't hold those same beliefs.

Moral choices are (for everyone) self righteous by definition.

Self-righteous: confident of one's own righteousness.

Righteous: acting in accord with divine or moral law.

I can't imagine most people with a marijuana prescription for "pain" or "lack of appetite" can really say they have those symptoms with a straight face.

Anyway here's my take, moderation is fine with me but I'd prefer it to be after gigs or after practice. There's nothing more annoying than being sober and dealing with someone who's noticeably drunk or high. After playing I'll be more than happy to join you.

I work as a substance abuse counselor and one thing I've learned, is that you can't "make" anybody stay clean. If someone else's substance use is impacting you in a negative way, you have the right to remove yourself from the situation. You can make suggestions and make your feelings known, but don't expect to change anybody.

Good question, but not likely going to go very far as a legal defense. Wish it were legal in one hand and show a bag of weed to a cop with the other, see where it gets you.

Weed is a convenient whipping boy. Alcohol, by comparison, is truly a scourge and the real 'gateway' drug. There is also not a freaking chance booze will ever successfully be outlawed, eventhough EVERYBODY knows someone who has been ruined directly or indirectly by alcohol abuse.

You'd think we as a society (U.S.) would have figured a few things out about this by now and put it behind us. It's such a tired subject.

As far as bandmates doing drugs; no matter what anyone says, nobody ever was made a better player with drugs. Be prepared for the worst, because often enough it happens.
