Drugs!

I played with someone who smoke a lot of weed ( like three whole joint in 5hours). I didn't like it but oh well it was ok. After a year I started to realize that we had to take a break to relaxe and let him smoke.

One day I just thought it was a bad image and kind of sad that he needed it to play/have fun/have some ideas. And the way he look didn't help the stereotype at all.

So I don,t play with him. I prefer a professionnal looking band and band mate clean of any drug or alcool habit, it just screams "potential problem".

Here's another thing to think about. I know some states are more tolerant than others about marijuana, but here they don't just "look the other way".

A drummer I know was driving back from a gig (he does not partake). The guitard riding with him had his stash tucked away in his pocket. At a sobriety checkpoint the guitard apparently removed his stash and hid it underneath the seat. The officer "smelled something" and of course they searched his truck.

Long story short, the guitard claimed it was not his so the drummer got popped for possession. He had to pay several fines, and now has a record. So just how much do you trust these guys ?

I don't really care what someone does on their time in their house, but when it has the potential to land me in jail. I'm not hanging around it.

I would like a little more info from the OP. Has drinking/puffing ruined rehearsals? Does it effect your writing? Have there been fights and stuff? Besides knowing that they do drugs, what are your true examples to have a paranoid attitude that they will ruin your band?

I feel if you mother your band, things will become tense. But if this is a true problem that does effect the fabric of your band, yes it needs to be addressed. Everything in moderation. You have to have water to live. But if you drink too much water, you will die. If you don't drink enough water, you will die. Drink to be in the middle. Hope you can find a happy medium!:)

Ive been in your situation. Just leave it alone unless it disrupts something... if and when that happens simply address what it disrupted. Not what caused it.

I had a guitar player that smoked WAY too much weed.... an hour into practice he'd be so stoned he kept screwing up his parts. So each time he made a big mistake Id stop the song and have us start over from the beginning. I never said anything about him being high though. I just kept having us start over.
After a couple times you could tell he was really embarrassed and getting frustrated. Next practice? He didnt take a single puff and played fine.

If I wouldve started criticizing his weed from the start he wouldve just gotten defensive and an argument would happen and we wouldnt get anywhere. So instead I let him figure the situation out for himself and he obviously knew he was waaaaaaay too high.
Problem solved.

FWIW Ive been in bands where the potheads are very "down for the cause" and are super productive.... in the same bands ive had totally sober guys that are just flakes.

Not to get religious here, but there's a special place in hell for a person like that...
And/or karma can be a real bitch...

As if just being a drummer isn't enough of a problem. :D

As I posted earlier, all of the rationales and arguments for using dope are largely negated by the fact that it's illegal, and mere possession of any amount is a crime by Federal law in the US.
Supporters of marijuana legalization (of which I am one) should expend their energies towards changing that, rather by flapping their gums and grandstanding about how harmless it is; suggesting that the anti-marijuana posters are unenlightened and out of touch, and as a result boring everyone senseless on a forum. Opinions that reflect marijuana as “devil spawn” are just as valid as opinions that it should be as legal as alfalfa; actually more “valid” since current US law is on the same side of that fence.
Send a letter or email to your elected officials instead.

Here in California, as of Jan. 1st 2011, posession of 28.5 grams or less is classified as an 'infraction' penalized by a small fine. Its no longer a misdemeanor and will not go on your record. As it is, one can procure a license to legally obtain medicinal marijuana, in which case fines for posession of under an oz. would be waived.

Yes, it is still illegal under federal law, and something does need to be done to change that. Thankfully, we're at least making some headway in the meantime.

Thanks guys. From what I read many just let it sit till it becomes a problem if and when of course. I'll do that I've given my warning on drugs and alcohol, only one in the band with previous band experience, and I know it messes things up if not in moderation. So I'll see what happens so far nothing crazy. And everyone's being responsible lol surprisingly

Everyone has his/her poison of choice. Live and let live, ya know? As long as it doesn't impact my ability to rock out and have a good time, then I'm cool with it. Most things are ok if taken in moderation and responsibly. All drugs can be abused. However, not all drugs are as "nice" as others. I would be very concerned if someone were to bust out a crack pipe as opposed to sparking up a bit of weed.
