Drum Machines?

I paid $75 for my Alesis SR16, which is fine if you want a fancy metronome. I can't honestly say how good it is for programming, because I only ever use the up and down tempo buttons on the presets. It suits me in my living room though and the stereo separation sounds great through a PA.

free downloadable drum machine for use on a pc or mac that duplicates the pretty decent drum setup on a BR600 or BR900 digital recorder. once installed it'll look for one of the BOSS units attached to your computer but even if you don't have one it'll still work. we've been using an old pc in the basement [with the sound out running into the PA] with this installed to jam along with for months.

BOYCOTT ALL DRUM MACHINES, and all forms of sequencers, and all karaoke, and all keyboardists playing left hand bass! They are evil and must die.

Electronic substitutes sound sterile....and they put real musicians out of work.

... and we should ban any instrument invented in the last few hundred years and stick to playing REAL music on lutes, tambours and crumplehorns. :D

CLARIFICATION:
....I didn't mean to suggest that the PERSON playing left-hand bass on a keyboard synthesizer must die....heavens no....but I wish the concept of putting a real bass guitarist (or a real drummer) out of work would die.

a real bass guitarist would have a bass the size of his or her body and be playing it with a bow. a real drummer would be playing with stones. so shall we go back to that?

but back to the subject. What would be better for electronica music, a drum machine or a sampler? i don't quite know the difference, so an explanation would be nice.
