Drunk guy didn't like my playing.

Many years ago. I guess she just had to get it out of her system.

We had a very beautiful and very drunk lady wander up to the stage as we were setting up for our bar gig. At the moment, just the two guitarists, me and the keyboardist are onstage. Drummer is tending to gear in his vehicle.

She wobbles there unsteadily with drink in hand for a minute or so and then blurts out.. “You guys are 3 guitarists and HIM as she points an accusing finger at the keyboard player”.

Her mission completed, she spins and zig zags back to her table.

We just look at each other :wideyed: and continue setting up. On a funny note. For the rest of the night, each time we introduced the keys, we kept referring to him as HIM! :roflmao:

For context, I’m an out of shape bald guy sneaking up on 70 years old. Was playing a gig at a small town watering hole. Table right in front of the dance floor was four 20-something women all wearing matching T-shirts. At the first set break I asked one of them about the matching shirts and she told me they were celebrating her friend’s divorce. They were partying hard and apparently having a great time, singing along, dancing.

At the next set break, I put on our usual funky break music and head off to the bar. I’m intercepted by one of the women. She tells me how much fun they’re having gives me a hug. Then out of nowhere, she starts grinding on my leg to the break music. I try to politely disengage, and she holds on and says, “Don’t move, baby. I’ve got you where I want you…”.

I’m totally embarrassed and eventually get myself politely untangled from her. My bandmates saw the whole thing and have never stopped giving me poopie about it.

At a biker bar (you have to be careful about what you say and to who), there's a really big guy - 6 foot 14 inches tall, 300ish pounds or something like that, in full biker attire, who keeps yelling "PLAY SOME ZZ TOP". And yes, he's obviously drunk - if this guy starts a fight, it'll be a VERY long time before he feels any pain. We're not a classic rock act, or even a cover act, we did original new wavish stuff, so we're probably not their kind of music, but they were tolerating us to that point. This guy's pleas happen between the tunes for almost a whole set.

Then, out of the blue, our drummer (he had a mic, he sang a song in that set) yells out "HERE'S SOME ZZ TOP FOR YOU". I'm in shock - I don't want to anger this guy, but as I turn and give our drummer the dirtiest look I can muster, he launches into our next tune. Which sounds nothing like ZZ Top. However, Mr Bigfoot drunk Biker apparently can't tell, and dances around the place with a lot of energy. You rarely see something that big move like that. Anyway, near the end of the tune, he trips, falls, and on the way down takes out a couple tables and a few chairs, luckily without hurting anyone. He passes out as he lands on the floor. The bartender comes over and takes his keys away so he won't ride his bike home (I got the impression he'd done this before), and the audience is (given that we're provided them great theater) on our side. After that, they loved us.

This is a high risk maneuver that I don't recommend - you pull this a few times, you're likely to get pummeled, but in this case, it worked. Which meant I didn't have to kill the drummer. Or fire him.

I am reminded of a time (a looooong time ago) when I did something really stoopid. haha. I was actually 'off duty' this night and went to see a buddy's band play. He's a drummer and we play together a lot and are pretty close buds. Anyway, his band was playing at a typical college crowd bar. They were very good tho. RB covers, some pop stuff, whatever. I was pretty tipsy and having a good time. Was actually out in the crowd dancing (very out of character for me) just having a good 'ol time when I lost my balance and took a spill right into the drum kit............ YIKES> Kind of f-ed up that tune for them but my buddy was cracking up and the band had a good sense of humor about it. I bought them all a drink after their set and appologized profusely. Thankfully this was before cell phone videos :)

The Middle East Corner in Cambridge was always a good time when my funk band had our monthly show there. Lots of walk-in traffic from people in the neighborhood, lots of dancing, lots of sweaty good times. One particular night there was a particularly drunk woman in a particularly short dress with particularly no underwear on. We wouldn't have known that except she took to "dancing" on the floor with her legs flailing around up in the air. The band got a lot more of a show than we bargained for that evening. Some things cannot be unseen... o_O:rollno::speechless:

lol gotta love the drunkies. We were playing a bar gig and during our break when the singer and guitarist do a couple acoustic duo type songs, this drunk guy sneaks up on stage and sits down at the drumset. Drummer sees this and runs up there and grabs the sticks before he ruins the song and the rest of the night he was so pissed at him. After the set he walks by and does the whole "you guys rock" [gives the finger to the drummer] "not you" thing haha.

Hey everyone, wanted to share a rather bizarre story that happened to me last week at a gig.

We were going through the third and final set at a bar/restaurant, business as usual. IIRC, it was the first night of 4 consecutive shows.

As were rapping up a song, the crowd is cheering, people are enjoying themselves, dancing, etc.
This drunk guy gets up out of his seat at the table next to the stage, and this is where the fun begins.

Drunky: "Hey! Turn down your f****** bass! You suck!"
Me: *Suprised pikachu face* "Oh thank you so much man! I appreciate your support!"
Drunky: "A Monkey with a guitar could f****** play better than you!"
Me: *Nods and laughs* "I really appreciate the support! Have a good night!"

Dude storms out of the backdoor and disappears into the night. BL overheard some of this, and during the next song proceeds to walk off stage, while playing, and look around for the guy. Couldn't find him

BL was like "man I was about to find that MFer and beat his ass" which I guess made me feel better, but you know if push came to shove, I did have the high ground on Mr. Drunky...

BL is the kind of guy who would throw down for his friends/bandmates in a heartbeat. We had a good laugh about it, but we were still confused about why that dude was so irate.

Turns out though, the drunk guy was with another drunk guy who kept bugging the drummer in between sets to let him play a few songs on drums, was rude to the staff, etc. So I am assuming that the dude who lashed out at me was maybe a musician who wanted to get on stage and play bass in his intoxicated state? Who knows...

The whole thing became an inside joke the rest of the week/weekend, and I had a great time playing.

Anyone got any funny/crazy drunk patron stories?
I filled in with a blues rock guy from a few cities over, the kind of dude who has different bands in each area to call up when he gets a gig there. Interesting guy, and I liked the music. But he had this buddy who showed up to the gig who was a giant no-go. Drunk and weird all night, and in the middle of a set he just got up on stage with us and started either singing or saying something into the mic-- couldn't tell which. At first it was like, "aha, funny!", but then it quickly became "that's funny. Now get off the stage". Even BL was annoyed. It was awkward for me, but I was mostly afraid he was going to step/trip on one of my cables and break a 1/4'' jack.

Later, said buddy nearly picked a fight with an old guy outside. Was not surprised to learn he was in possession of (and most likely under the influence of) several illicit substances at the time.

He was a "promoter", basically code for "I promote events, putting in little to no effort at all, to cover up the fact that I deal coke."

LOL! I ignore "civilians" when I'm playing a gig. I can't count how many times have I really nailed song and vocal delivery, to the overwhelming approval of the audience, only to hear some trash talk from some drunk at the bar during the break. Or ... when the band played a friggin trainwreck of a song, me feeling absolutely mortified, almost apologetic for having crapped on their stage (grin!) ... and got patted on the back at the bar by a drunk saying "youse guys are great!" ... nope. I don't listen to civilians. :)

One time a guy watched my group play and he approached me after a set and told me he would like to manage us and that he had connections. He told me he had connections in Vegas unfortunately his connection was he laid the Sod at Wayne Newtons house. I watched him leave on a bicycle.

Many years ago I was playing in a blues band with my custom P-style fanned fret bass, years before fanned fret instruments became widely known, about the time Sheldon Dingwall started building basses. At one gig, when we finished the first set, we repaired to a booth in the back to have a beer before starting a second set. I had my bass on a stand under a light so I could keep track of it. A guy who had obviously been there since he got off work, probably @ 5:00 or so, staggered in front of the stage with his beer. He saw my bass out of the corner of his eye, stopped, looked at it, looked at his beer, looked at my bass again, looked at his beer, shook his head, set his beer down on the nearest bar table, and left looking very confused and definitely drunk. We laughed so hard we could hardly compose ourselves to get the next set started. The thread about the bass: A Different Custom P-style Bass
