DST- Why????

I will say, it's nice to wake up for work in the morning and there being sunlight (wasn't any this time of year before DST). I also get a nice bath of sunlight (w00t for vitamin d) on my drive into work too, I tend to feel better compared to driving to work in the dark. There's still some on the way home from work, but I do feel much better starting off the day with sunlight as opposed to dark. Working in an office building again has made me a sunlight junkie....

Arizona resident. Nice to not have change stuff locally but it still screws up our TV schedule. Programs that were on at 7 are now on at 8. Or is it 6? And vice versa in spring. Or if we're dealing with business in another state it's frustrating to have to remember what time it is there vs here.

We have a thread lamenting DST about every six months (go figure!). I'd wondered aloud why there even are time zones, that every place in the world would be the same time, but our reference of a 9 to 5 workday would then be 2 to 10 or whatever. Flights arriving at an actual five hours after departing would save a lot of calculating. But someone did provide an answer countering my thoughts, but I don't remember offhand what those reasons were, but they seemed to have some validity.
There are time zones because that damned sun keeps moving. The concept was developed for the railroads back in the 1880’s…

But, as Slash pointed out, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

I'm the other way. I don't much care if it's barely light going to work, but having the sun begin to set as I leave work makes me think I missed the whole day.

For some of the time I was in grad school, I'd go in early and leave late and spent the day in a building without windows. For most of the winter, I only saw the sun on weekends.

I still don't understand it.

Winter - 8 to 5 means you're going to work in near darkness and going home in the dark. Summer - 8 to 5 without DST means you've got maybe 2 1/2 hours of light after work. So if you want more light after work in the summer why not just have people change their work schedules to 7 to 4? (Or whatever the specific hours are)

Whole thing's stupid to me. At 12:00 pm the sun ought to be as close to directly overhead as possible given one's position in their time zone.

Oregon, Washington, and California are for DST year-round. They also want a federal blessing. But then covid took a higher priority the last 2 years. So nothing has happened.

Personally don’t care - Pick Standard or DST and stick with it and end this anachronistic madness.
