There are a zillion great options for the OP. I would only say that since the SR Special is already at the top of the short list, at least demo a Bongo. I think EBMM did a super job with the 4 band EQ and on an HH it is GREAT.

Also as previously mentioned, Nordstrand has found amazing tone in small packages. The bigger MM sized ones are spectacular. I currently have a Jazz Bass set up with a Bigman and a Big Splitman. BOOM! But my Jazz Basses with Big Singles and Big Splits are fantastic too. My best bass has Big Splits.

It works in active and passive mode. Actually all the controls work in passive mode too.

The knobs are :
  1. volume;
  2. treble cut;
  3. bass cut.
The toggles are:
  1. Pickup selector: neck, both, bridge;
  2. Pickup coil connection: series (bass boost), parallel; *
  3. Passive, active and active with more treble toggle.
*For the USA one you can ask for the so called SCM AKA Single Coil Mode option which adds the single coil selection. In the single coil mode the closest coil to the neck and the closest coil to the bridge are activated giving you a jazz bass like configuration. Clearly you can still use the first toggle to choose the pickups you want to use.

In the picture you see an American one that sells for around 2k. You could look at the Tribute AKA Indonesian one that's one third of the price.

And if you go with the American model, you can have a jazz neck or a p-neck... your choice!

That is a great looking build.

OP dual humbucker basses are all about the switching for me.

1 of my Warwick $$'s runs Bigmans, so I get true singlecoil options.

The other has a pair of SD Alnico MMs, so that's more in line with a EB HH.

Possibilities may lead you to build out several basses to cover your inspirations.

I suppose it really depends on what you want in terms of sound and versatility, not to mention budget. As mentioned, it's tough to beat the bang for the buck of a MM Stingray or Sterling - or even a Sabre Classic for that matter. The MM preamp is rather unique IMHO.

I have a '78 Stingray...so somewhat familiar with a humbucker....budget around 2000-2500
