Dubious failure by Fender Custom Shop!

So the Fender CS unveiled some gorgeous new models for this past holiday season; one of which is a “Journeyman relic 1968 jazz bass”. Relic’ed nitro body, quartersawn neck, blocks and bound…. You know the works.

It’s all great, but the Fender Custom Shop chose to use a decal from the late 70’s/early 80’s era, instead of the “period correct” late ‘60’s/mid 70’s decal. All this historic Fender mojo for well over $4,000!!

Actually Maple and black blocks DID in fact appear in the late ‘60’s. Often described as “maple cap neck.”

This is not a customer special order. It’s a generic custom shop build for 2022. The others all have this late 70’s decal.

Do a Google search on “Fender Journeyman 1968 jazz bass” - you’ll find these in all sorts of colors: olympic white, sunburst, black, candy apple red, etc…

it might not be a missed detail in as much as a purposeful mistake in order to keep these relics from being passed off as true vintage. in reading about relic history, many "experts" were fooled in the initial years...or at least surprised. Its easy to stick a period correct sticker on a headstock, scratch the paint, write in pencil some dubious dates, and voila! a true vintage 69.

Then by that logic, why doesn’t Fender get the decals of ALL their models period-incorrect like they have with the 1968 Journeyman jazzes?

That said, The word “RELIC” is stamped/ENGRAVED under pickguard on all custom shop stuff.

I don't categorize myself as as expert but I do know that the quarter sawn maple neck, CS mark on the back of the headstock and the engraved "RELIC" under the pickguard, among other details make rather obvious what it is and what it isn't.

But the bass I’m showing isn’t a “one off” — the whole line of “1968 Journeyman jazz basses” has this incorrect decal!
