So a close friend of mine has been playing for a long time, and is pretty cool. Decent guitar player.

The problem is he has no music theory and refuses to learn it.

I play my bass tuned to C standard. Because I prefer it.

He plays guitar usually in Standard or drop D.

Could not grasp the concept that a G is a G period, and although my fingers don't correspond to his, we are still able to play in the same key.

Freaks out that I wont be able to follow his progressions because it takes me a minute to find the root.

Doesn't get that once I find the root, the progression is very easy to follow because of the power of scales.

Finally I tell him dont look at my hands, just play and I will find you.

Find his key and chord progression in a bout 20seconds. Play simple but groovy and tasteful bassline.

I don't think he is dumb, I just think he doesn't understand basic logic.


Explain it to him using this analogy: 5+5=10, if you started at 3, what would you need to add to get to 10? That's basically the same thing you're doing, his g on his d string is on the 5th fret, your g on your c string would be on the 7th. Same note, different place.

Of course, you could really just f with him by playing an unlined fretless. He'd probably have a stroke trying to figure out what fret you would be on...

^^This^^ and I would pay to see the total look of frustration and confusion as you played around him.

Mind you, guitards never like being provoked. The tantrums are entertaining at first, but they get boring after a while.

The guy is only a guitard if he doesn't at least try to learn(been there, done that)!!! If he has a good ear, you ought to be able to work it out.

I tune to Concert Pitch (A=440Hz) at home so I can practice to CDs etc and then down a semitone from that when playing with the band to make the higher notes easier for our singer.What notes are your open strings?

You just tune your E string to C and then drop the rest of them down 2 steps as well.

Normally it's EADG, this would tune to CFBE.

And I don't understand why this isnt more popular. Because I see guitarist changing tunings from Standard to Drop D Drop C, to flat, ect.

With C standard tuning I can play in key with all of those tunings. The most popular tunings on strings instruments from what I see are lowering tuning. (loosing tension).

Rarely does one Tune up.

So by tuning to C standard I can reach the proper notes for all the alt tunings, especially on bass the higher notes are usually not called for.

I don't know if I explained my case very well. My point is that in C Standard I dont have to change my tuning very often because alt tunings go Lower rather than Higher.

I would need a crash course about what elements add to the music and or your musicianship.
If you are dumb,will only mean you are also dumb when tuned down.

I play a five string tuned to ADGCF for that reason... I use it all the way down to the low A and wish I had lower from time to time.

I have only ever had trouble playing one of our songs in that tuning, and that's one that requires me to play an Amadd9 chord using the open A. It's hard to finger in other tunings, but possible.

Some songs we change key too even though we are tuned a semitone flat from standard. By just going down a fret we can keep all the usual familiar chord shapes etc but just make it a little easier on him as his vocal register is quite low. As a player I prefer the string tension of standard tuning and find even a semitone down feels a bit strange. Tuning my E down four steps to C would feel too strange I'm sure but I don't feel like messing with the truss rod to find out!

Because I enjoy heavy metal, and playing downtuned gives lower pitches, which sound heavier.

Some guitarists like drop tuning because it makes power chords easier to play at speed.
