Duff McKagan (EX-Guns n' Roses)

Workin' hard at hardly workin'.
I'm not necessarily doubting any of your claims about Duff's playing abilities, but considering how big of a p***k Axl was (and is), would he really have kept the Duffster around if his playing was that bad? I mean, Duff was one of the last original members to be given the boot (or maybe he quit, I don't know).

well, considering the times i saw them live, tightness and skill were not major priorities for mr. rose as far as his band was concerned.
who knows? maybe duff was cheap and didn't complain.
I don't think he was cheap..........no way i've recently seen an interview with him at his home over looking a huge lake and his three boat's. One strange thing was that he's learning to become an accountant.

Duff is now in a band called "Loaded"!!
And, yeah. He's playing guitar in the band and not bass.
And it seems that they are pretty good !
Their shows are always jammed !!
Duff also played bass in the last 4 albuns from Izzy Stradlin (ex-GUNS N' ROSES too).
AAhhh, he "knows" how to play drums too.
In his first solo album "Believe in Me", in some tracks it's Duff himself that has played all the 3 instruments - guitar, bass and drums -
Now... I'd like to know more about these new guy, Tommy Stinson, who's playing bass in GNR now !

Axl is an a**hole. His new band is NOT Guns N Roses! it's the Axl Rose Band and should be called that. When he finally got rid of all the original members (Slash, Duff, Izzy, Steven, and even Matt, Dizzy and Gilby) it wasn't GNR anymore. He's got balls to call this new band GNR. No way is it going to go over with the fans. 
If duff played on appetite,he was a pretty cool bassist.

Well - the bass playing on Appetite was quite good. The sound was nice to. I've never seen them play live - although I saw a televised gig and have their Use your Illusion videos. Haven't wathced them in a few years, but he seemed OK then!

I remember him playing Fender Precision Lyte basses through Trace Elliot Amps and Cabs - but this was what was on stage at one of the televised gigs in some hotel or other in 1987, so his gear may have changed!

GnR have been over here in the UK this weekend. Four of my friends saw them at the Leeds Festival on Friday - most of the 50,000-strong crowd seemed to have been there to see them. My friends thought it was one of the most amazing rock performances they'd ever seen (and they've seen the original GnR, Nirvana...etc.). All the reviews in the media have been extremely positive. Nobody who has seen them has moaned that "it's not the real GnR".
My friends are also watching them again right now (Monday night) at London Docklands Arena.
Tommy Stinson is from the Replacements, a very well-respected US indie rock band from the 80s. They were also known, like GnR, for playing so drunk and otherwise $#$$ed up that they couldn't really play. Great songwriting though.
As for Duff. . .never saw them live. Like his recorded tone though.
I had a class in Junior High taught by either his uncle or his father (never got the real scoop), "Mr. McKagan". Looked just like him but older and with less hair.

And they, till nowadays, keep supporting the old members too (slash, Duff,Izzy, Matt etc..), but
they said that this "new" bad kick ass, indeed.The new guys are extremely good. Talented and Axl....

They were just totally amazing. Axl has obviously got his act together because he didn't act like a prat all evening!
Unfortunately I never got to see the real GnR (before my time) but if the "Use your Illusion" videos are anything to go by, the new GnR is actually a bit BETTER than the original!
I think everyone would rather see them with Slash though, in truth....

Buckethead is a fully paid-up member of GnR. He gets one or two solo spots a show. At the Leeds festival, his solo consisted of (among other things) breakdancing whilst spinning nunchuka (sp?), playing the 'Star Wars' theme and even a bit of "slap" guitar! I've even found an .mp3 of his solo spot from that show! Check it out:

-I used to love them... I was 13-14, my friends had skateboards, we started smoking and Guns was cool, but I never fancied Duffs playing... -But it worked with the rest of the band! To me, it's just as important, if not more, to contribute to the bands sound than being a great instrumentalist. And whether you like it or not, Duff was an important part of that sound, with his crunchy, metallic sound. They detuned a semi-tone, and that's, along with the fact that he played with a pick, quite a long distance from the bridge, what made his sound so "noisy"...

I once heard a live recording of it, and then played wrong at the one, single note that makes that line "magic" (or at least a "hook"), that's the major 6th (the highest note in the phrase.) He played a minor 7th, and that reduced the catchiness of the whole tune in an almost remarkable way... I believe "Appetite" was an analog recording, and hence not to much edited... "Lies" and "Appetite" are good albums, and there are some OK moments on the "Use your illusions" albums. Whatever came afterwards is crappy to me. -Maybe I just grew up?
Duff used mostly a black P-bass and GK rigs, I think.

) the complete lyrics to "Coma", I learned the guitar solo on "November Rain" by ear in 5 minutes and I once counted the number of similar drum fills i "November Rain" to 31 !!! -Listen to it, it's incredible !! I used to like Guns because it was the only band where I could've sat in on drums !!! -But it was my teens! Don't mock it !!!
