dUg Ultra Bass 1000 - Tech 21

Thanks for chiming in. I hope you do decide to get CSA approval and sell it in Canada, I know there's guys here who really want one besides me. :)

any chance on making the Dug into a pre amp? I've been a big fan of tech 21 products for a while and already have several sans amps I use with a crown power amp and ampeg cab. The dug sounds great, but I'd like to be able to pay less for just a preamp as I already have a power amp.

My hunch is that the preamp won't happen unless the amp has some success.

I'm torn. On the one hand, same as you I have other SansAmp rack preamps, and it would be nice to have a Dug preamp too... especially if it was 1U and could be paralleled with one of the others. On the other hand, I'm now an old phart and as much as I dig rack rigs, I'm trying to downsize to lighter/smaller amp heads.

On the other other hand, I recently got a small amp that I love, so I think I need a dUg pedal. :smug:

It doesn't make a lot of sense to have a bass control on the high pass channel, so I approve there.

Similarly, I suppose it doesn't make sense to have a treble control on the low pass channel either. That said, it's been in my mind that the LPF channel could be used by itself for clean full-range sound, so I guess I made a bad assumption. That is, "full range" would be the bad assumption. I was hoping that there would be a way to go from full-on dUg style OD to a full-range-but-clean sound with one flick of a (foot)switch, but the LPF channel likely won't do full-range unless perhaps you swing the LPF to maximum, which looks like either 6 or 8kHz.

Of course I'm just speculating based on what I see above and have heard in the demo videos. Perhaps there will be a way to quickly go from full-range-clean to dirty.

very much my thinking as well, fuzzbass. i don't mind losing the top channel bass knob to make room for a master volume. i do want the bottom channel to do full-range clean, though, for when the top channel is off, just as you say. i think, instead of a "mid boost" which is only engaged when the channel is soloed, i would put a treble control there AND i would disable the LPF when the channel is soloed.

truth be told, though, i usually roll off lots of highs anyway, so maybe bottom-channel-solo will be just fine for me anyway.

all that being said, though, i still want the amp even if it can *only* do dUg tone and nothing else. i just hope they don't screw it up between the prototypes we saw dUg demoing, and the version they put into production. we'll just have to wait and see...

I agree with everything you said, but this is the bottom line. The OD tones are incredible, and I'm confident that I'll be able to use this with my hard rock band, even if I have to twist a few knobs to go from over-the-top dUg tone to a more conventional tone.

After talking with Andrew and dUg at NAMM it was pretty clear this amp will be able to do a "normal" bass tone. It's not going to be a one trick pony. Now, will it be perfect for you and the clean tone you need with the push of the footswitch? Who knows, you may have to do some knob turning/tweaking or settle on a nice compromise. First and foremost it's designed to give that grindy tone but they have enough foresight to know it needs to do a little more "pedestrian" tones also.
