Dumbest person you have EVER played in a band with

"no one wants to hear the same thing for every chorus in a song, its gotta be different, no bands you hear on the radio use the same riff for each chorus in a song"

- A former guitarist

the other 4 members of the band all stopped working on what they were writing, turned, and just stared at him for about 3 minutes finally the singer broke the silence by saying "that's why bullet for my valentine will never make it"

lmao. This thread is hilarious. A lot of stupid band member behavior seems to come with delusions that musicians are "rock stars" and I mean "rock stars" in the very cheesy 80's hair metal sense. Bringing that kind of mindset to a working band still slugging it out is tremendously stupid.

You know, in my nearly 20 year "career" Ive encoutnered LOTS of real dolts... whether it in bands, auditions, open jams, etc. What I'd like to know though is.... take ALL the guys you have EVER played in an actual band with, and narrow it down to the absolute biggest moron you can think of. This can be someone who lacks sense, or is just plan stupid.

Mine is a cover band from 2001 I played in for a short period. We had a singer, his name was David. David was in his late 20 s then. He looked alot like the wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, cept he had a pot belly, and somewhat of a combover. He looked 1/2 cool... and 1/2 horrible. But the dude had golden pipes. He did some Priest, Sabbath, Dio.. he could wail.

Anyhow, 1st practice, he stood there and gave this speech about how the band should function. He told us that all of our gigs would start at 6 PM so that we could be home by 10 PM. I told him that the bars don't even open for load in until 7 30 usually, and that we will be expected to play til 1-2 am. He then told me, "if they want us bad enough, they'll meet our demands". I was thinking, "omg... this guy just fell out the stupid tree and hit his head on every branch before he landed". We all know that NO bar owner is going to listen to non sense like that from ANY band, much less one that hasnt had a gig yet. Nevermind, that most people are working or just getting home from work at 6 PM.. geez...

Anyhow, he told us the reason that gigs will end at 10 PM is that his lady can't sit at home waiting too long. She was pregnant btw, and I doubt it was even his to be honest, but I digress. He told me that her "sexual needs" come first, and that he will come first. Truth was, he was a jealous lunatic who didnt want to leave his woman at home for too long out of fear that Jody would be coming over to take care of business.

So the next practice, I suggest we do "White Room" by Cream. The guy told me that, "this band will play no cover from the 60s or 70s". I was like "ohhhh... k". He then told me that no one even knows who Cream is. I told him it was Eric Clapton's old band, and he told me "b*llpoopie", Eric Clapton wasnt in that band, he was a solo artist. Yeah...

So one day at practice, this moron decided to "show off" for us. He lived on a farm, and decided he was going to grease a pig, and then try to catch it (with no shirt on). I was drunk as hell, sitting outside with the rest of the band, who probably were like me, and just sticking around for the entertainment value at this point... he went to try and catch this pig, and ran head first into his truck and knocked himself out.

After a while, this guy's stupditiy and dicator-like behaviour was enough for me to hit the road.

About 3 years later, I saw an article about him in the paper. He had been arrested for exposing himself on a bridge to oncoming passengers on the Interstate.

I would say I wonder what hes up to now... but I don't.

This has got to be the grand-champion winner. I can't imagine a human being this stupid, in a band or anywhere else. (I'm not saying you're lying, of course, I just can't even fathom this guy). He reminds me of a character on Trailer Park Boys.

About six years ago the cover band I was in recruited a new drummer after our previous one bailed (don't remember why). New guy had a killer kit...Tama custom deal of some sort. He was a decent drummer...solid, and trying to improve.

Anyway, his personality was a bit quirky to say the least. He started showing up at our guitarist's house 2-3 hours before practice time. Guitarist had to nip this in the bud when his wife started getting annoyed (understandably).

He never seemed to quite "jive" with me. For some reason he would take offense to everything I would say to him, even when I was trying to compliment him.

"You're playing pretty good on that one."

"Yeah, whatever..."

He claimed he couldn't hear his kick well enough, even though we were playing in about a 12 x 12 foot section of our guitarist's basement (and not an open basement either, very sectioned off). So of course he brought over an enormous 15" sub to mic to his kick, with the sub pointed right at himself!

Our one gig with this guy was a New Year's Eve gig which he got us. It was in the bar of a pizza place. Our guitarist/singer owned a PA, so of course the drummer decided to hire a sound guy to provide PA for the show without asking us first.

Drummer showed up to this 9:30 PM gig at about 3:30 in the afternoon, and proceeded to get trashed. He had also made sure to bring these huge canister lights, pointed directly at himself, so he was completely hot and sweaty before the first set was halfway done. Mid-way through the second set, he ran out from behind his drum kit to the bathroom. So that set ended early...

Sound guy also told us that before the show, drummer didn't seem to like the mix of his drums at all. Sound guy kept adjusting, and drummer kept claiming he couldn't hear it. Finally the sound guy turned off his monitor and drummer said, "That's perfect!"

Anyway, night went on, and the gig went over fairly well, despite drummer's rather shoddy and drunken performance. Finally at about 1:30 AM, there were only about 20 people left in the bar. We told him, "Hey, let's do five more songs and call it a night."

This set him off. Supposedly we were supposed to play until 3 AM or some non-sense, according to him (forgot to mention that the details on this gig kept changing based on his whims). "I'll get my stuff tomorrow and you guys can find a new drummer!"

I told him, "Fine, but I don't like ultimatums."

Three songs into the final set, bar owner tells us to finish up. Crowd was dwindling and bar staff obviously wanted to close up. So we finish the song, drummer gets us our money and leaves the gig in a huff (ditching his own gear and the sound guy he had hired). We packed up, went home.

Next day, drummer calls and tries to play nice. Guitarist asks him, "So, when are you getting your stuff?"

Yeah, that dude was a real dumb ass.

I forgot to add, the guitarist in the cover band I was in...the band had TERRIBLE dead air in between songs(I actually started a thread about it a year or so ago). One practice back when I gave a sh!t about it, I brought that up as something we should work on during our gigs. He argued against us cutting out dead air, saying something along the lines of "I went to see Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they went song into song without stopping, and it pissed me off. I wanted to hear them talk to the crowd!" He didn't like me telling him he wasn't Anthony Kiedis or Flea, and nobody gave a crap what he had to say. He also argued that people in the crowd need a break from the music. This band is still terrible.

Definitely my current drummer and vocalist. And former vocalist/guitarist. The current drummer is just honestly stupid. He loves to use words he doesn't know the meaning of or just say words that aren't real. He's not that good, he doesn't really have any idea of dynamics and will complain if you ask him to play softer in a section or to actually listen to a cover if we play one. He pretty much hates me for reasons unbeknownst to me. He looooves to use "I'm just making a statement" as a cover when he's wrong. He complains we don't have as many shows/fans as a band that our friends are in, but doesn't realize they're semi-professional and have been touring musicians, plus they've been playing in the area for two years. He's socially awkward. I hate when he talks to people at shows, because he always ends up creeping on any female singer. I've told the band not to schedule any more shows past the last one we have lined up, I'm really not sure I want to put up with any of the stuff anymore.

I was in a band for about a year with this 30 something year old guitarist who insisted on lugging around an entire gym bag full of effects. He had no pedal board so setup time at practice and shows took forever and the small practice spot we had was cluttered with stupid needless effects. This was a local new wave pop band for cryin' out loud!
He also carried around about a dozen prescription pill bottles for his after show drug binges. If some people are into that fine, but in don't want to try to work in band with that.
To top all that, he had no car so, me being to closest distance to him, I had to pick him up where he lived with his mom and drive him and his gear to and from practice and gigs.
Never again!

Current drummer: Has to mic every drum, even at rehearsal, and regardless of how small the gig is (see other thread in BM forum).

Two drummers ago: Filed for personal bankruptcy... while working on a degree in accounting (I'm not making this up).

An auditioning drummer several years ago: Told us he had carpal-tunnel syndrome, and couldn't possibly play for more than an hour in any 24-hour period.

I'm not saying all drumbers are stupid, but they do seem to be well represented...

As a drummer myself with carpal tunnel so bad that I can't even work full time (though luckily I can still play..reminds me of a Todd Rundgren tune...) how does this qualify the drummer as "dumb"?

I know that it could disqualify him from some gigs depending on how many sets you do, maybe make rehearsing difficult, but it looks more to me like a guy who is still trying to play despite his condition.

Didn't make this clear in my original post, but it was for a working cover band that had to play four sets a night. He knew that before he came to the audition and wasted our time. I'm sympathetic toward anyone who has CTS, but really -- to come to an audition just to tell us he has a disability that won't allow him to gig with us? That's pretty dumb.

Not a band story here, but an orchestra one.

Guy comes to every rehearsal and after the final rehearsal says he can't make the concert. He knew it when he took the gig. He later complained when he didn't get paid for the rehearsals.

He never did figure out why he never played with that orchestra again.
