I bought Grateful's Carvin SB5000 on an impulse...<drum roll>...
...and it became my favorite bass!
I wanted to get a Geddy Jazz right up until I played it. I loved the tone (Alder+70s pup placing+glossy maple neck=win), but that neck was a dealbreaker.

I bought a Peavey T-40 a few years back because that was my first bass, when i was 14. I regretted selling it to raise seed money for my Ric 4001. That first one was a typical ash/maple job, but when I saw the beautiful SiennaBurst one with a rosewood board on my local Craigslist, checked to see if there was any overtime available the next day. There was, so I worked a half shift and snagged it the next day.
I think I paid too much for it, and I really don't play it as much as my other basses, but it sure is nice, and my bandmates really like its tone.

LOL Check any forum on any given topic. The 'net certainly is not short of people with strong opinions, regardless of whether they're right or wrong.
I wasn't looking for the second bass I ever bought but when I saw it I liked it and I remembered seeing a picture of Jimi Hendrix playing one so I decided to go for it. It was a Hagstrom 8-string. They gave me a decent trade-in value on the POS I had.

Traben Array 4 as a stupid teenager who believed the ads about their dumb bridge. Luckily its a super light bass and has a super fast neck so maybe I can sell it quick.
I heard a story about a guy that bought 3 of the same kind of basses because he liked the strings - what a moron. Oh, wait a minute, it was John Entwistle and some Dano basses..... Never mind. 
I bought a black Traben Chaos bass, with the huge chrome flames. I saw it in the Musican's Friend catalog, and ordered it on impulse. It's an early one; made in Korea.
I thought about sending it back. But, I took it to some gigs, and the guys I was playing with really liked it. And, it sounded pretty good too. The people in the bars think it's some kind of expensive custom instrument. It's heavy, but it balances nicely, and it's fun to play.
So, I still have it, and I'm pretty attached to it now.
