Dunable Club!?

I’m also probably going to the Dunable warehouse sale tomorrow so who knows if I end up picking anything else up too
And that I'm still waiting on my Thunderclapper 5!
For real though, I wish I was close enough to go to the warehouse sale. I'd be broke.

I only WISH I had good things to say about them as a company….I kinda got a raw deal, originally commissioned a doubleneck but after 18 months without them even STARTING it, I realized they were never gonna get it done….I recommissioned a Bass VI in order to get SOMEthing and not forfeit the deposit. To their credit, it’s the most beautiful and well put together instrument I own, but the ordeal was a painful one. Those thinking of commissioning a custom one, I highly urge to seek used first and if nothing satiates your appetite, beware that “12 Month” turn around is more realistically 24+ months with little to no contact from them in the interim aside from excuses….
Extremely high wow factor, they start with beautiful wood and every step after that is done perfectly... great pix. I put Dunable on my reverb watchlist, which is getting to a couple dozen builders so i can't get emails everytime somebody posts one.
(i ahve to admit i clicked on this becuase i thought it said Durable basses, like hey this one fell out of a 2nd story window and plays fine.

Anyone care to share your thoughts on the Baphomet pick ups? They sound pretty good in the short demos.
I’ve been checking demos lately but have no hands on experience.
They seem a bit more growly/warm/mid/compressed/congested than others in the lineup. I think a lot has to do with the amount of distortion at the pedal/amp. I prefer the Katana which is supposedly more J influenced. It is more defined and “precise” to my ear. The D Birds and the P 90 are interesting to me. The D Split sounds fairly P like. Out of that bunch the Baphomet is probably my least favorite in the demos, but I’ve never played one in person. I don’t think it sounds bad, and I can see why one would be fun. The others strike me as more conventional and/or versatile. But if you want that growl, the Baphomet could be a sound you won’t get elsewhere.

My thoughts may be an outlier as mine is a Bass VI with an active preamp, but I LOVE them!!!! This thing gets absolutely BOOMING lows and crisp clear highs!!! They are quite versatile and work great CLEAN as well as with effects! And I don't mean just dirt either! They are also very well balanced!
Interesting. My experience was the opposite. I have US R2 that came with Baphomets and I thought they were very dark. I had Katanas in a DE R2 that I sold off when I bought the US and missed those, so I ordered a set and slapped them in and fell in love with the bass. I have since acquired a Thunderclapper that has Katanas in it, as well. The two basses sound different enough for me to not worry about dropping the Baphomets back in, but I am going to put them in a baritone telecaster, which gets me a little closer to the aforementioned bass vi, since I play exclusively in BEAD.
Having said that, I also have a DE Gnarwhal with the dual splits, but I don't know if the DEs still get US pups.
Aaaaaand, I have a Thunderclapper 5 that's been on order for almost year at this point and I went with a dual D-Splits on that.
I like Dunables.

Thanks for your input! I’m used to a higher(ish) output pickup. Mostly a Model P user. I’ve been thinking about doing a dual humbucker build and wanted to use this form factor to keep the vibes up. The katanas are interesting to me. I play in A too so the additional clarity may be helpful.
I thought they sounded a bit congested too. But there is another YouTube shorts demo he posted where they sounded really good. The one with the green yeti in the thumbnail.

I think they tend to end up in the bridge position, and that location combined with picking technique and amp settings could contribute to the congested feel. I think the bass matters. The Cyclops bridge pickup looks closer to the bridge than the Thunderclapper. I like the Cyclops better.
Question for those with painted matte finishes (no gloss), particularly black ones. Is the finish particularly delicate?
I ask because I tried a new USA with a flat/matte black finish at Guitar Center last year and there was noticeable wear around the neck where it hung from the wall mounted holder. It also showed a decent amount of player wear for a new instrument. I recently started looking at another black one listed as “new” by an online shop. I couldn’t see anything like that on their pictures when browsing with my phone, but when I zoomed in on a bigger monitor I could see handling marks along the back and edges. There was a decent amount of dust under the strings, and the pickguard plastic had been removed with bits of it still poking out from under one of the knobs. I couldn’t tell if this was a used/return or just shop wear.
I visited the old physical store here in LA years ago and didn’t notice anything like that on a matte white one I played.
Overall, I’m trying to manage expectations if I take a plunge on a $3k+ USA.

Both of my US models were bought used and they were both in very good shape. The R2 had a ding by the bridge when I got it. The Thunderclapper has on tiny dent (not through the finish) that I may have put there. Overall though, the finishes seem pretty durable and my two couldn't really be further apart, with the R2 being a trans grey burst/stain thing.
They are both '21 models, so they have some milage on them.

I will say that -- other than you -- no one is hoping you get your hands on one more than me.
Picked mine up from the 'fieds here a few months back. R2, Baphomets. Its outstanding. Love it. Plays as good as any instrument that I have - feels just fantastic.
Its probably a taste thing, and they just suit my eye and preference, but its impossible to find one that isn't absolutely gorgeous; like way beyond their custom price range. In my opinion, their looks compete (in their own way) at the highest level; like Fodera, Sadowsky, etc.
Not only that, but they make their own pickups; their pickups are all very creatively placed and combined on the different models.
Really, really high quality all around from Dunable. And really accessible comparatively from a "custom" design/build perspective.
Gimme a number baby!
