Duncan SPB-1 vs Squier P pickup w/sound clips

I think I prefer B, but I'd have to listen to it in a band context.
Either way, the difference is not significant enough to justify paying for the Duncan.

As many have said, I preferred A for my style, but I did appreciate the additional warmth you got from B when it was rolled off. I just never use that tone

I like the couple of posters who said " I like pickup "X" better, so that must be the Duncan." It is to laugh.

I like A better because there's more clarity while maintaining the depth. I am a fan of deep fundamentals, but B is too focused on the lower strings, especially for what is being played.

I have to say that lately i tried to find information online regarding alternatives to the stock PU in my MIA precision.....
I only tested a SBP-2 once, into another bass......

So, after reading opinions, i had discarded the idea to test a SBP-1, because i had the belief it had not so much high harmonics content.....
But after listening to this A pickup......... maybe i'm going to give it another chance !

FWIW, I measured the resistence on both of these pickups.

SPB1 - 11.5
Squier - 5.92

the squier measuring at 5.92k, seems like you only measured one of the coils...

Measured from both of the leads same as I did with the Duncan.

IMO, something's not right there.

at 5.92, the squier should be the brighter of the two sound clips, but by going the results that you posted, the duncan is brighter.

IME, the SPB-1 has more thickness and low end than a squier p pickup (which has more upper mids and is thinner sounding).

yeah,.. the test was rigged, IMHO!

they sound like they were EQ'd differently. or the attack was varied.

Think what you want but they are 2 different pickups EQ'd exactly the same.

That's why I questioned whether I could have wired them incorrectly. I'm positive that I didn't mix up the recordings.

I liked B better, then read through and found it was the Squier. It's not a surprise. Pickups are just magnets and wire, the cutting edge technology of about 1929. There's no reason a squier pickup can't sound great. And in my experience with pickups, which is pretty extensive, they sound different depending what bass they're in. PIckup A might sound great in a different bass
