That's pretty shocking about the Nepenthes. Everyone I've talked to, including other builders, have said the Nepenthes is the thickest sounding Rat style pedal around. Sorry it didn't work out for you. (I have no stake in the game...just love those guys and what they do).

I was all about trying the Halberd but they were pretty scarce/sell out fast. I’m seeing them start to pop up more now maybe I’ll give it a go. It was the cool harmonics and overtones that got me on that pedal.

How is it on bass?

Electrofoods pedals are great. I have had most of them at one point or another. But I found the Eye of Ra to be the most bass friendly of the bunch. Nepenthes just made the sound too unfocused and clanky imo.

We all have different gear and use things differently, but here's a short clip I made of the v1 Nepenthes when I had it. I plan on getting a v2 eventually. Use headphones. Sounds massive to me, and still retains that Rat thing...but again, we all hear things so differently. Super glad you dig the Eye Of Ra. That's one that I haven't tried yet! My buddy Hondo digs his a lot.

I think the Halberd sounds pretty awesome with the bass guitar. However, I'm running it along with the Kuro T-120 through the Bloop, which makes make everything sound good.

The halberd is an interesting little box. The bass and pre/gain interact a bit uniquely and I've found it to instantly improve some situations. But other situations it hasn't worked out as well. But that's pedals in general. I've found it sounds amazing in front of a tube amp on the verge and has amazing clarity of sorts.

^ well put. John from EAE has said he kind of wishes he'd labeled the Bass control as another gain stage, since it and the Pre stage are so interactive. it's not a transparent drive pedal, but truly amp-like in how it reacts to your plucking/picking attack. I find with the gain at around noon I get only slight tone coloration, with a moderate amount of compression (which I love). then at higher gain it gets very grindy. hitting it with another low to medium gain pedal is addictive, since it has a preposterous amount of headroom

It sounds like that for sure. I'll be on the lookout for a used one.
