I've just had some.

It's supposed to taste really nice once you get past the smell.

It doesn't. It tastes like it smells, a mixture of rotten onions, brussel sprouts, munster cheese and dead cat. And it doesn't go away.

I will never, ever, ever eat that abomination again.

You know, something that looks like that is basicly saying: "DON'T EAT ME!". It smells rotten, too, so why eat it then?

But every week when I go into the asian grocery, I curse their very existence.

To a certain extent, taste is smell - just to a different degree!!

On nature programmes I've seen, as far as I can remember they are supposed to be irresistible to Orangutans and some apes, but repugnant to us...?

Those were on some show about strange cuisine from around the world. The african guy who was showing them to the camera crew seemed to enjoy it hehe.

I've had it in Thailand. Friggin awful. I remember seeing signs at Hotel and a few other business entrances with a No Durian sign. Like a no smoking sign - a picture of a durian fruit with the red circle around and line through it!

Word of warning to anyone dumb enough to try this hideous monstrosity. Don't try to take away the ever-so-lingering aftertaste (four hours later, I can still taste it) away with a carbonated drink... burping is no fun, believe me!

Well, flavour is. Taste is the salt/sweet/bitter/sour/umami thing.

Alright, I have to admit liking Durian.

The first time I ever smelled it I nearly puked. I couldn't be in the same room with it. I told my coworker the next day about it, and he being such a great guy, brought some in to the office for everyone to enjoy. I tried it, didn't puke, but didn't really enjoy it either. That same coworker decided to bring some more in a few months later. I tried it and almost enjoyed it. After having it a few more times I began to acquire a taste for it. It's actually pretty good.

Whoever said not to try it with carbonated beverages is right on. If you're feeling especially adventurous you might try it with Dr. Pepper. It's good training for Fear Factor.

My dad brought home some durian candy from the Philippines. That shizzle was rank. I think it's still in the cupboard at my folks house. It's been there for several years.

I remember seeing the same signs in Malaysia. Never saw something like that before.

whoa im from the philippines! and yep they (i also dont like durian fruit either so what im proclaiming is the durian lovers not my country) sell durian candies and some remote province where fastfood is not known and cable tv is not very much appreciated, guess whta!? this is their fastfood, they set up small stalls near the barely concreted road and selling them in open public and they even have spoon, forks and plates in so you could eat it there....now thats fastfood
