Dust collection

Greetings

I'm in the process of revamping my workshop in my basement.

I really need to focus on dust collection.

I see that there are a number of options. I'll be looking specifically at making a down draft table and probably installing a vac system of some type

I was wondering what everybody is using here. What were your successes and failures

I do woodturning (lathe), and kick up LOTS of fine sawdust. I've not made a downdraft table, but here are some tricks I have used:

1. Buy a portable dual window fan (http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-CZ309-Portable-Window/dp/B000CSXYD0). This gets rid of an amazing amount of dust.

2. I use one of those ceiling mounted electric filters (http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Fox-W183...ower-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1403535222&sr=1-3). But rather than mounting it on the ceiling, I built a 2'x4' work table on casters, and put the filter under the work surface. This way I can move it around the room to whatever I am working on. Also does a great job.

3. Down-draft tables are good, but are kind of one-trick ponies. Use a dust vent on your shop vac, and put it right next to what you are working on (also allows you to put vac in the next room to keep noise down).

4. If you are using a number of different tools that need dust collection, consider using PVC to make a system so all you tools hook up to the dust collector, and just cap off the ends not being used.

• One of my thoughts for the down draft table would be to incorporate features so that it wouldn't be so one dimensional. For example I have some ideas for incorporating a sled that would have an angle adjust. Also considering mount points for a couple of power tools like small spindle sander. Also thinking of using an old furnace fan mounted in the table for the purpose of creating the downdraft. Probably put a variable speed control on it too

Either way, get the window fan. Best $20 I ever spent. Also great for fumes.
