Dusty's 10 thread

Hey guys,

I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on this thing, so I guess the 1 month thing isn't going to happen. What a suprise that is to us all. I also changed a couple details on the fly.

Body is glued, padouk on ash. Rough shaped as of now, will finalize shape on the belt sander. I didn't bother with a template on this one, nor am I really planning much in advance. Just having fun! Neck pocket is done.

Neck shape is finished. Next I'll map out the fretboard and cut the slots. The headstock is going to be a very simple shape, as pictured. I may shape it a bit smaller if I have the space. We'll see..

Changed the upper horn a bit, will have it attached to the body

Here's the basic idea:

I got really sidetracked for quite awhile and didn't work on this bass at all. In the meantime I started building a 7 string fretless, and completely changed the concept of the 10 string.

Here's the 7 I'm working on:

It's a 28 in scale. I used very heavy strings, so the tension is actually very good.
The body is yellowheart and mahogany with a 3 pc bee's wing bubinga top and headstock facing, the neck is bubinga and ipe, the fingerboard is bloodwood. Lignum nut. Not sure what to do w/ electronics yet. The fretlines are drawn on, so I can get rid of them when I'm used to it.

The 10 will now be headless:

No rush on this one anymore, just a leisurely build. Since I'm largely making this one up as I go, I'll work on it when I feel inspired. Any suggestions?? Does anyone like it so far?

Im guessing by the last picture of your ten that your going to mount regular tuners on the butt end of the bass. I also noticed that the higher five strings will use a smaller tuner maybe from a guitar? Pretty cool stuff, Im just wondering if you will have enough room for a control cavity. You gonna go with something simple maybe just volume tone and a jack?

You're one of the more talented builders here amongst those who don't plan. I keep cringing thinking you'll screw up, but im glad you haven't yet - keep up the good work!

Going to have your bass piezoed? don't see space to drop too many pickups or electronics in...

Thanks, man. Yeah, I think I'm going to piezo that bridge somehow. That part below the cutaway has a hollowed out space for a knob and or switch. We'll see...

That is really nice, the 7 looks sweet and the 10 will be really interesting. I like the fanned/headless design and the way that you have it set up. The regular tuner idea is a great one. I can't wait to see both of them done.

For pickups for the 7 string, get norstands.

Thanks for the responses! I'm from NJ, that sketch in Amsterdam was done on a vacation!
The lower horn was done for a combo of sitting more in the middle of the bass, with better balance sitting. With the tuners on, the balance will be really good. The Ipe/mass neck is pretty heavy. And also, for a unique look:) .

I'll get Nordstrands or other quality pickups for the 7, when I feel ready to install them.

I'm also going to start another very unusual build very soon, so I'll post pics as progress on everything:)

personally, i'm not all that crazy about the upper horn but i have to say that your bass is probably some of the finest work i've seen done, especially considering the complexity involved. will be following this one closely...

love the 7, btw.

of course, theres a lot that goes into erbs, if i am correct, including tension, the string guage, pickups, but it was a valiant effort, haha i think we just totally hijacked this thread

hahhaha sorry for the digression. Its just I waited a year for the epic conclusion of the 13bass....I should placed bets, because the project, of course, totally flopped. Valiant effort, I'll give him that.

My guitarists keeps asking for "experimental", so it looks like i'll have to pick up an erb soon.
