dynamic mic question

2 quick questions. as i mentioned i am trying not to buy anthing new if possible , and while i know it is possible to plug directly into my interface's input with my mic and process afterwards, i have a quick question about an alternative.
i currently own this:
EDB-1 (No longer available) | Headway Music Audio
first question is , is there anything wrong with using this? the maker says suitable for studio use and i think its pretty decent quality input stages etc. the reason i would use this is because i could keep the eq flat, and run the xlr out to my interface for my "clean" tone, and take the 1/4 inch out and run it through another box that is not flat and would add color, like an eq or an highly colored di box, then into the other channel on the interface, and then i could have two sounds to choose from or blend. 2nd question is there anything wrong with doing that?
the 2nd channel i have been using with the 1/4 inch out is the Avalon U5. i dont know how to describe what it does but i really like the sound its giving me from my mic. is it strange to use a DI with a mic? it seems that the avalon V5 is essentially the U5 with a mic input.

The Headway is a good piece of kit and the way you're describing it's use makes perfect sense. Its a little audio swiss army knife .
Describe it as a preamp instead of a DI and it makes perfect sense to run a mic through it as well. The fact that they have an xlr input on it tells you that is an expected use of it.

Thank you for this great answer. Actually the u5 does not have an XLR input on it, the V5 does and I only mentioned to that to compare it to the u5 but what I own is the u5, but I believe you have answered my question anyway. If I view the u5 as a preamp and not a d i box then it makes sense. And that's kind of how I'm using it. It puts a sound on the signal that I like that's different than the clean sound out of the headway
