dynamic mic question

hi there, i have a beyerdynamic 88. i want to try it through a bass guitar oriented preamp pedal (a nice one), mostly just to save myself from buying another piece of gear.
what kind of adapter / transformer would i need? i already own a lo-high impedance one...is this the correct one?

The input on a device for an electric guitar is high impedance. The M88 is low impedance. You need a transformer/adapter that has a low-impedance female XLR and a high-impedance phone plug.

Get a passive DI and hook it up in reverse. But .... why?
That is a great mic and I fear that hookup will be unlikely to do it justice

Micing an upright bass to go into my audio interface for recording. I was just hoping to run it through some tube stuff that I already own for electric Bass. Not sure how it would sound though.

i haven't had issues with them.

have you tried yours to hear for yourself whether or not there is signal degradation? asking for a friend.

if you have the impedance adapter handy, just give it a try. Easy enough to experiment when you have all the parts at hand. If it sounds good to you, then it is good

Unless the tube stuff is adding some specific color that you’re after I’d just go straight to the interface and avoid the impedance changes.

Don't do it! Just because it has a tube in it, it isn't an API. You might archieve far better results with a plugin. Except you're going for some weird low fi effect.

Those are actually transformers. Many people swear they love transformers.
Transformers are great for impedance matching and isolation.
If you have a ground lift problem you can crack those open and cut the ground.
They are 99.9% of what's in a transformer DI. And good thing to have in your box of tricks.

The M-88 is a pretty great sounding mic on its own. If you want some flavoring, then I would suggest an external mic preamp with an API or Neve flavor, or add something in post as a plugin.

Definitely experiment, but you may end up with lower quality results than the M-88 can deliver - may also be easier to get a cheaper or different mic.

Yes, the M88 is a great microphone. Your time might be better spent just looking for the best position of the mic to get the results you want. Because it's supercardioid, positioning is crucial.

Wait...your Audio interface does not have mic xlr input? I don't uderstand what you are trying to do.
And yes, forget about those converters, it is a really bad idea.

the audio interface does have xlr input, but i am trying to run the mic through a tube preamp that i have before it goes in to the interface. i found a way with plugging the mic into the headway, taking the 1/4 inch line out of the headway and running it through the tube preamp then into the interface, and i also take the xlr out of the headway and run it straight into another channel, so i am able to compare the two sounds. not ideal i know, but as i said i was trying to avoid buying something new. eventually ill wade through all the mic pre amplifier options out there.
