So my friend is a guitar player who recently picked up the bass. I love the guy but he has a tin ear.
He was asking whether it's normal to be able to work out the parts of a song by ear, because "feels like the kind of powerful witchcraft that is not meant for mere mortals" and his "usual state is sometimes having trouble telling if a note moves up or down".
I replied "I think up or down is usually easy. Like, from D to C vs from D to E is easy. But...... from E2 to D3 or E2 to F3, maybe a little harder."
We tease and joke a lot, and he sent back "E2? Your 'bassist' is showing."
So I let it go, lived my life, and as I was walking in the house with a fresh, hot cheeseburger, my eyes went wide. I've got this sucker...
So I spent an hour and a half on this while my cheeseburger went cold.
