East Tennessee Talkbass

My two sparkle basses and a few on the wall. The sparkly green dual P came together at 7.8 pounds with a heavy bridge and fat finger on the headstock. I can’t rave enough about Warmoth! I’ll probably be building my own basses from now on, using their bodies and necks.

You guys are giving me incentive to organize my music/office/gear storage room! I have many more basses than floor stands, so it'd really be optimal to do wall hanging systems. I see the rest-of-July project at hand!

Thank you! Yes, it's been at least that long. The tarnished hardware shows its age. But, I'm typically very careful, lucky, fortunate (whatever you want to call it) in that I have never put a significant ding in a bass body. And, the Ray paint still looks new. But, that Marty Bell finish is hard as a rock anyways, and could probably take some hard hits.

I plan to have marty bell do a finish for me one of these days. I'm not sure I have the talent for cool designs that you have though lol. What's the story on the funky USA lakland again? I forgot about that one

I wish I could claim the paint swirl design. But, Markus Lewtschuk created it. I did pick the real silver flake for the pickguard, and had Mike Quick create it.

The Lakland is from ‘98 or ‘99 (I forget). It’s named Sexual Chocolate. It was built by a guy at Lakland for himself. He later sold it. It originally had a J/MM pickup config like typical Lakland 55-94s. I never played it that way. When I bought it, I had the seller send it to Lakland to get their brand new (at the time) Chisonic Humbuckers and Lakland LH preamp. They haven’t made the Chi buckers in years, and only make single coils now. So, it isn’t easy to replicate the sound of old Sexual Chocolate!

It’s got a Purple Heart pickguard and control cover. Weird and wonderful bass!

That is such a killer story! What an incredible unique bass. If we ever get to do another GTG I would love to play it again.

Yesterday, I finished a level/crown/polish and setup on a mail order Ric copy kit bass. It cost my friend <$200 and it now has closer buzz-free action (with almost no relief) than my best basses. Granted... I haven't felt the need to file the nut slots as low as I could on my primary players.

And, after 30 years of thinking that I hate P basses and flat wound strings, I put together a P that changed my mind. Then I bought the MIJ 58 that is in my avatar pic, loaded with Sadowsky blue label flats, and my quest to explore all the different flats started. I've spent a small fortune on different flatwound sets from LaBella, DR, Sadowsky, D'Addario, GHS, and TI. And, I'm currently trying them out on various basses.

If anyone wants a great amp, I have 3 that I will sell for less than $600 each. I also need to let go of some 80s Peavey basses. Message me for details, if interested.

JJ did some awesome work for me on 2 of my basses. Nuts, fret work and a pre install. Results were fantastic and they play like butta now. Thanks again JJ.

Any upcoming gigs?

Clint Keeton Band will be at The Pub in Jamestown this Saturday night. Fun little dive that gets jam packed whenever we play there.

I needed it like a hole in the head, but I traded an amp I wasn't using for a 2002 US Peavey Cirrus 5 in Claro Walnut. I played a friend's four banger a while back, and the opportunity came up to trade for this one, so I jumped on it.

You know I love that Cirrus, Jeff!

I won’t be able to gig or see any shows. My fiancé started getting sick Friday night and tested positive for Covid Monday. I got swabbed later that day and am negative, so far. I’ll not be allowed to work for a minimum of 24 days, unless I test positive and recover. Then, I’m allowed back at work sooner. CDC cohabitation guidelines for quarantine are the worst! Anyways, I’ll be staying in and probably selling some gear since she won’t be working or getting paid for a while, and I’ll be running out of PTO before I can go back.

Be safe out there my friends! We, as medical professionals, took every precaution and it’s still in our household. Timeline suggests she picked it up while grocery shopping amongst the uneducated, misinformed masses of non-mask wearers at Walmart and Food City. What can ya do... we have to eat.

Ha, just stumbled here. Y'all are making me grin here in Texas. There is nothing like autumn on the Cumberland Plateau. We do not have those colors here. I have earned a lot of tickets on highway 111!
My grandparents from Willow Grove, filled over when they built the dam by Celina to make Dale Hollow Lake several decades before I was born. Stay safe in East Tenn.

Celina!
I was in a band that played the Sawmill quite a bit in Celina! Folks around Knoxville would ask me where the Sawmill was and I'd tell them drive halfway to Nashville, hang a right in Monterrey, as soon as you cross over in KY hang a hard right and come back into TN and you would find yourself at the Sawmill!

Always dreaded the trip, but loved playing there! I miss it, burned down several years ago.

I keep telling myself I'll make time to post a start to finish build thread over on the Wishbass side, but this little beauty went through quite a transformation over the years. Thumpin_P did all the heavy sawdust making and it was literally his vision to transform this bass into "Ritter" quality. Pat Wilkins did the finish, JEDI BASS did the final assembly and install when I ran out of time, and finally John East completely redesigned the preamp for me when the mid sweep control wasn't functioning correctly.

I finally got around to doing the very final setup, carefully making a new nut and bridge saddle for it, dropping the action a tiny thousandth at a time until it was perfect, flat and low, and growlier than a grizzly.....
