Jeff, I see your left hand has not seized up and fallen off from playing upright as you feared it might. Has your hand strengthened up now, and not hurting you like it was?
I just finished with the first show I did this summer, Charlie Brown. We did most of the show back in June, but came back and did two perfs this past weekend at the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It was a good time. The show band was up in the balcony of the Flex Theatre, which is a "black box" type performance space. Unfortunately, the sound guy, who does sound for a lot of the high schools and some of the community companies around Knoxville, likes the musicians to play through a monitoring system, wear headphones, and not use our amps. I despise this setup, but I adapted to it. What was strange was our drummer got to play an acoustic kit, but we didn't get to use amps.
The score was really chopped up due to the director taking numerous liberties with the show. I put a lot of taped-in changes into the bass book, and wrote a lot of penciled-in notes. There were at least seven songs or song excerpts that were not in the original score at all, so these were taped in or inserted. For a good number of the songs, I used my image software. I scanned pages and copied and pasted pieces of songs with lots of cuts, to create printed pages without gaps. It probably took a good ten hours of my time to get the score updated in a way that I could read seamlessly during the performances.
I enjoyed hanging in Maryville on Wednesday and Thursday for rehearsals at the theatre, and then Friday and Saturday for perfs. Gave Fullservice BBQ a lot of business- had a pork sandwich one night, and got a pound of pulled pork the next night and a pound of brisket on Saturday. Those of you in the area or visiting should check Fullservice out if you are a BBQ fiend like me. They have excellent 'cue and they do non-fried sides, which is kind of a twist. They also have some really cute girls working there
The other show this summer for me was Music Man, which went really well for Oak Ridge in July. They had around four sellouts, which they were hoping for, financially. I was crammed into "the pit" with 7 other musicians. Not the best arrangement, but it was nice to do another show, finally, back out in the auditorium vs. being backstage in the workshop area. I got to use my Shuttle combo, which sounded really nice. We even got to turn up a bit.
I used the fretted Epiphone Zenith for both shows, and it played well and sounded very uprighty as always.
So ends another good summer of music theatre for me.

My band will be playing at The V in Lake City this Fri and Sat.... on a wing and a prayer ;-D. Using a new guitarist and playing some songs he can sing, also letting our newb female (attractive!) singer get some experience. Our main guitarist/keyboardist can't make the show. It should be interesting, lol.
Ahh the V Club, we aren't back there till sept. Always have a hard time with volume there, all the smooth solid surfaces I guess....

Are the marinas and docks on the region's lakes hiring bands more so at present than before? Is this a pretty good scene to play?

Norris Lake is the one closest to me. Flat Hollow Marina on the Claiborne/Campbell line I know has live bands on a regular basis.
I'll bite, at least for our area.
This year and last year seem to be about the same, although the hotter it is, the busier the marinas tend to be, and owner's therefore feels that bands help business. Private parties seem to be about the same from my limited perspective. Most private parties are referrals from band or personal friends.
Pay varies greatly here. I will remain a gentleman and not name places, but let's just say that there are a couple of good ones, and way too many places paying 150.00-200.00 with an endless stream of bands willing to accept. We avoid those places like the plague.

Anyone in the Knoxville area know of any places that rent practice studios, rooms, spaces, etc.?
There's a slew of them on Central in the building that houses Gypsy Hands. The Bird House in 4th and Gill used to have some, as well, but may not be doing it anymore. I think I saw an ad in Craigslist for a place that some decent amenities, but I remember it being kind of a high monthly rental rate.
Gig update: Kudzu will be at Nater'z Bike Night in Maryville tonight from 7-11. Friday night (8/16) we are at Roger's Place on Kingston Pike from 9-1 and Satuday night (8/17) we are at River Rock Grill at Seqouyah Marina in Vonore from 8-12.
Doing a coffee house gig with Karli Kravat, young up and comer, very sweet young girl with a much older voice. Her drawback will be the guitar and double bass "Accompaniment".
Personally have very little experience with the song selection, and sometimes have to transpose on the fly, but I'm looking forward to it. This Saturday night if anyone is interested and otherwise uncommitted.
