Hey guys. Is this small GTG going to happen Saturday night? With some family in town, I cannot guarantee, but I'd really like to meet you all up there if I can make it.
Gig Update: Kudzu will be at Hog Pen in Niota this friday night (8/30) starts at 930p. Saturday night we will be at Cancun's Mexican Restaurant at the Foothills Mall, starts at 7p, this is family friendly event.
Chicken Dog - Yes, I'm going to be at Lincoln's on Saturday night to see Jody's band. Jeff, are you and Laurel coming?
It's gonna be a big night for Lincoln's! The game on pay per view should draw a crowd and last time we played there we set a record for Friday night draw and $$ brought in. It was standing room only..... on a Friday!!! Pays to have a bunch of good friends! We appreciate all you guys that come out!
Is anyone else coming out to hear Jody and RR play tonight?
If you're coming, but don't know Jeff or me, we are going to get there around 8 (me) and 8:15 (Jeff) and we may be easy to spot, I don't know. Jeff might wear something bass-y.
At any rate, Jeff and I will be talking with Jody at various points of the eve, so find us and introduce yourself and hang out.

So very nice to have Jeff, Michael, and Chicken Dog (Mike I believe) come see us! And of course, Jeff and MV had their lovely ladies with em. If Radio Rehab's loser bassist hadn't been nearly late, he might've had some time to socialize ;-). It was hard between sets, especially with former bandmates and old friends from high school there also. But, man what a fun time! Thanks so much for coming out!
Rolled out early this morning, which was possible after leaving Lincoln's last night at 11:30 (after two sets of RR). I imagine Jody got home just a wee bit later. Jeff is probably already up and at it also, to get to rehearsal this morning. Hopefully Jody's still getting some zzz's.
That was a good time last night. Lincoln's is a very nice and attractive non-smoking sports bar. When we got there last night, the UT/APSU game was just ending the third quarter. The Big Orange faithful were there in force and yelling for more blood as the Vols blanked APSU. Jeff and Laurel got there not too long before us and got a table two back from the stage area. We all chatted a bit and Radio Rehab hit the stage right as the game was ending.
This is a band with a pretty distinctive songlist. I only knew about 2/3 of the songs we heard. A lot of it was very danceable, although no one did last night. Jody mentioned that at their shows at "The V" last weekend, the dance floor stayed full all night and I can see why. It was good to hear the 80's-era tunes they played. Jody played his Lakland through two amps and two cabs: an Ashdown Little Bastard into a Carvin 1x18, and an Orange into an Orange cab (2x10?) Good tone indeed, although Jeff and I did the usual cajoling for "more bass" when we saw Jody at the first break. Jody and the drummer, Troy, were solid throughout.
Jody has a very strong left hand technique. Several times last night, he kept the song going with his left hand while pointing or getting a drink with his right, and never missed a note. Very solid bass player, and he handled all the different styles with aplomb. Good job last night, Jody!
Vann, RR's guitar player, is a really good singer and guitarist, and Brooke, their vocalist, is young but very strong already as a singer. She easily has three times as much hair as the rest of the band combined. Maybe 4 or 5 times..

It was very good to meet Mike (Chickendog) and talk a bit before I left for the eve. Mike, thanks for coming out to the show and tracking Jeff and me down, and for spending the eve with us. We'll try to keep getting up these ETTB hangouts at each other's shows, maybe once a month or so. I'm really enjoying hearing you guys play out. It's a great chance to talk gear and music and life.

My 2nd LB was powering an Ampeg 2x10 (SVT210-AV)... that's the rig that my effects run to. I keep the other one clean and thunderous. I had those two 30 watt amps turned to about 4 LOL!!! I love those Bastards.

I saw a TB club someone started for small tube amp owners and it was almost entirely people with LBs. They obviously are very popular. I wish I had heard one and had a clue. Let me ask you this (sorta long question): In my experience when you get in band volume the tonal requirements are very different than at low volume. You no longer can hear nuances of warmth and the high end really disappears the louder it gets - so more has to be added in order to sound like it sounds at lower volume. So I always wonder if the tube amp tonal advantages are as great at loud volume as they would be at lower volume. Your thoughts?
In short... no complaints!
I've gigged with as much as 3,000 solid state watts, hybrids too with tube preamps, and I don't feel my LBs are anything but BETTER in every way. I'm not sure how loud they'll get with my current cabs, but I still have lots of headroom at the venues we play at.

Yeah, everyone says they are surprisingly loud, but what I meant was this - can you still hear a tonal advantage when you get into loud volume where tonal requirements change and warmth is not so much the issue as projection?
Yeah, that's what I meant by no complaints . I walk around with my wireless during shows (although I didn't at Lincoln's cause I misplaced my batteries), and sure there's tone changes throughout the room and at different volumes. Human bodies dramatically affect the sound. Is the tube tone advantage noticeable at higher volume? IMO yes. But... it depends on what you want. For instance, I could get more brightness and attack clarity (lose some warmth) by losing the 18 and going with another 2x10. I've had that loud, bright, punchy sound for years with solid state amps and 3-way cabs, so I'm kinda digging the change. And I have to say that all my friends that have been to my shows over the years (many are bass players or musos) are complimenting my new sound.

I'm not sure about inlays specifically, but I've been really impressed with his other woodworking and guitar repairing skills, such as repairing sound holes and broken head stocks, or crafting his own bridges. He's got a lot of patience and really takes pride in his work.
It was nice to meet you guys. I'm hoping to make it out to see more of you and others, so keep posting events. Jeff, I ended up not taking that gig, so I'm still looking. Michael, I'll PM you my contact info for the playhouse stuff we discussed.
Again it was great to get out and meet some fellow bassists. Looking forward to next time.
