seriously i groan every time i see a burst bass, with a tort guard and a rosewood board...I feel like it's something my grandmother should play...

That look was so the standard in Fender catalogs circa 1968/69 that I was and have always been attracted to Blonde Maple neck Tele basses. They showed the 5 string with a metallic charcoal painted body!!
