EB Volume JR Question

My drummer just came over to my apartment and gave me my Christmas present: an EB volume jr which i was quite excited for, until i started playing with it. I'm sure most of you are familiar with this pedal and that it has a string/pulley system inside to turn the potentiometer . Well whenever I rock the pedal slowly it functions fine, however if i do so at even a medium speed the string slides around the potentiometer instead of turning it and the pedal does nothing, or only swells to half volume or something. Is that a known condition of having a pulley system like this? Or do i have myself a faulty pedal? I couldn't find any info out in the internet, and i can't think of a better group of people to ask :D
