EBay Harmony H22 $1700

i got one recently and it's great. got a good deal--around $525 in it after setup!! very cool bass, but then again i love hollowbody basses and use those sounds a lot. i may even get another one before they're all $1500!!

I have an old Howlin Wolf Kay--paid $800 a few years ago for it--put about $200 into setups....one just went for $2350 on ebay--mine is similar, probably worth about $2k....i think it's too much, but that what it's worth....i wouldn't say i use it as much as a $2000 should be used, but it's was worth every penny of what i paid for it. great, unique tones that record well are all good in my book

Interesting, thanks for the info.

I wonder if replacing the .005 cap with something less radical would give a better second tonal option?

IIRC yours is in very good condition, so I wouldn't suggest "replacing" the .005; instead of that you could leave it there and connect the legs of another cap to the legs of the .005. That way if/when you sell it you can remove it and the electronics will still be 100% original.

Caps in parallel add their values, so if you added a .047uF you'd end up with a .052uF, an unnoticeable difference. A .022 would be .027. A .033 would be .035.

I'd try all three with alligator clips and use whatever I liked the most.

That's a sweet trio.

How do you like the Kay? I've seen them on ebay, usually 2K+ as you said. Other Kays go for a lot as well, but the Wolf is King as far as selling prices.

thanks--the kay is really hip. great, acoustic-y tone--you can really hear the string and the attack. huge, funky V-shaped neck. can't adjust intonation and such, but it's pretty close :) it's the perfect bass for certain situations.

lovin the harmony too--rounder tone. upper register isn't as nice as the kay or JJ, but the low end is killer

I thought I'd resurrect this old thread with a link to a craigslist ad

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

He has the nerve (or sense of humor? mental illness?) to be asking for $3750 for an H22 that doesn't have any special features (like diamonds or 24K gold or a few thousand $$ of cash wadded up inside)

I swear, these days sometimes I wonder if the world is on crack...

I really like old instruments - provided they've been well cared for and not abused or beaten around. However, IMO these old Kays and such are grossly overpriced. There are plenty of good instruments made in China and Korea today that are just as playable and sell for peanuts.

If you want a good hollowbody at a decent price, look for an Aria, Lyle or Univox HB from the early 70's. They can often be had for $300 give or take, and they're good solid well made basses. You can hear mine (with the mike on the camcorder) on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/colocoug . Everything there is my Univox with flats.

Just saw this thread again- thanks for the further cap info, GlennW. I was just musing, in any case, I don't really need a second tone option.

Now the RIs are out I'd love to hear some opinions from someone who has played both. If they've built a better quality bass with the same PUPs then I can see a market for them.

Resurrecting this thread again. I have a Harmony H22, and there is nothing I dislike about it. Fully hollow and when in good condition, a dream to play! For something that's completely hollow to last that long and not be broken is a miracle! I have the original case too. I have no idea what it's worth, but I don't care. I love the thing! It's the antithesis of a Fender, and although a budget model then, this bass has a beautiful tone that no other bass I've played has. I had a local luthier set it up, and it plays better than new now. Got it for a lot less than what I would pay for one. To those who have judged it, I wouldn't until you've played one!

I'd love to have one, it was my first bass back in the 60's. I looked at getting another on about 2009, thought I could pick one of for $150-$200, after searching around on ebay, they were $600-$800! Now, they're like $1600.

Nice photo!

Yeah the local music store by me has one that's immaculate, even has the original chipboard case in perfect condition. Looks like it was played but well cared for and probably never left the house.

How much? They're asking over $1,900.

I played it for a while. Sounded good but I was getting some distortion and warble from the E string when played up past about the 10th fret. Don't know if that's just the set up (it was set up nicely) but disappointing for the price they wanted. I'm a fan of short scale hollow body basses and this one tempted me, but I've got a Gibson and two Kays I love so at the price they wanted I'll let someone else enjoy it.
