EBMM reflex & 25th Anniversary Club

I have a question for you Reflex owners about the neck finish. After 1st trying one a few weeks back, I've finally had the opportunity to go back and really spend some time with one - a Reflex HH - for a few days in a row. Even played it through my own amp head. It's given me a serious case of GAS, even though I'm happy with my other 2 basses currently.

Anyway, I know Musicman uses an oil finish on the back of the neck. The neck on this particular Reflex feels "grainy", almost like it's unfinished wood. It's still smooth (it's not like I'm worrying about splinters :D), and my thumb glides along the neck no problem. Maybe I'm just used to a glass-smooth slippery/satiny finish. I don't remember my Stingray SLO having a neck that felt like this. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I guess I'm asking the question since it feels "different". Does it require a regular wipe-down with gunstock oil or something similar?

Man, this thing is a tonal beast!

The oil finish almost feels unfinished, its pretty wild man. I'd just wipe her down with some lemon oil or something along those lines every so often man

If I go HH, ill probably go maple, hss, probably rosewood. But sunburst is my color of choice. I like gold but some pics it looks almost yellow.

I don't have the bass at home with me at the time, but I'll have a look in my Pro Tools folder tomorrow and see if I can dig up some recordings :) I know for certain that I at least have a few tracks of it with the hb + middle sc.

Reflex HH5 last night through an EBS pre instead of my Streamliner

WOW. I really loved what the EBS brought today. Tons of upper register cut & aggression to add to the Reflexs natural vintage warmth. It certainly outplayed my Bongo last night in the same situation last week.

Low end for days, sometimes EBMM can be light & tight on the low end but not this particular Reflex.

We were really stuck in the same blues\classic genre last night so I didn't really need to go bonkers dialing in various tones except for Skynards Gimmie 3 Steps which is very aggressive bridge pickup tone & I was able to nail that perfect too

EBS stuff is really nice, what a special voicing that gear has.

I told ya I was in no rush to leave! I'm playing it right now for Gospel... sounds great. I really like moving into passive mode & I've found the right level for the bass knob to still be aggressive in active & move into passive for a mellow P bass tone without any volume difference. Really cool

This passive mode is very P bass vs J bass... is that what you're getting or is that my Ebony board\ Roasted neck? The other Reflex HHS I tried at GC had a hell of a snarly attitude & wasn't that warm.

Alright guys... anyone elses Reflex nail a P bass better than a Sterling? Is mine just a one off? Honestly its pretty awesome even though its not what I expected. The upper range of this bass is very rounded & not clanky\aggressive like a Sterling or a Jazz

Is that all Reflexes or just mine?

This bass is sounding better & better everyday. Who knew EBMM could have warm vintage round tone?

EDIT: So I listened to Keko & Ed Friedlands clips again. Both have maple necks which clearly are going to bring a little more sparkle to the tone. Neither video of the Reflex can do a convincing Sterling... at the same time though, neither one has as much P bass warmth as mine. The Reflex is clearly more of a neutral bass. Really fantastic sounding, I'd imagine recording with this is MUCH more pleasant than a Sterling. My producer once said hell no to my Sterling H during recording, I'd imagine hed love the Reflex

OK, here's a quick iphone shot of my new reflex 4 HH! The variety of tones I get with the reflex & my Will Lee is making me reconsider whether I even need my P bass anymore! With a rehearsal tomorrow & a gig Saturday (different bands), I'm looking forward to seeing how it sounds in a live situation.

Thanks to keko & Ed Friedland for posting some informative video clips. The Stingray SLO Special I used to own didn't stick around for very long (and I thought I was done w/ MM for good), but I think my time with this reflex will be a lot longer!
