EBMM StingRay Special Club

Whats up everyone! I hope 2020 is treating you right.
Has anyone replaced the controls cover on their Special (photo attached)?
I absolutely love this bass but I can't stand the controls cover --- it's way to industrial looking to me and kills all the design lines.
I really like how the control cover and pick guard are one in the same on the 5 string versions...I wouldn't mind something like that on my 4 string.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I can't offer any guidance on what you are wanting but I found your post hilarious. I'd love to turn the SR5 into a SR4 look wise, similar to the Classic 5.
Stingray Special folks get a little testy when you bring up modifying their instruments. They’re kinda like the Apple style customers that aren’t into tinkering and think the product is perfect already
I haven’t seen any aftermarket solutions sorry.
I think the easiest way to go about it would be to try and get a pickguard maker to adapt the 5 string design that has the area that extends down to the controls to the 4 string version.

I’ve been checking this out. It’s cool there are OEM replacement pickguards. Wish there were replacement pickup covers to swap colors between black and white.
That would be sweet. Hopefully enough people show interest that they expand the offerings a bit. Would be cool to add some tinkering options to EBMM instruments finally. And with OEM parts

They aren’t perfect, they don’t come with Dunlop staploks
That’s the first mod to any of my basses, except for the Rick since they decided to be different and not use wood screws. I know you can modify them to adapt, but it’s just easier to use the Schaller’s.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think one issue is that the pickup cover is "glued" to pickup with epoxy or something unlike a P or J pickup.
You are correct. I swapped a white cover for a black cover. Not impossible to do, but I wouldn’t do it again, FWIW.

Not EB, but I asked Bartolini about replacing the cover on one of their soapbars and they told me that it would likely destroy the pickup on the process. I think heat is involved and it was more trouble than it was worth.
I believe the only “approved” way to change pickup covers is to have an authorized EBMM dealer exchange the pickup with EBMM. I imagine one would pay full price for the new pickup (I had a replacement ordered, and it was $100), and there would be no exchange value for the old one. It’s one of those things that makes EBMM special (bad pun intended). I, for one, don’t much mind this hard-nosed approach to maintain brand exclusivity.
EBMM actually sold me a cover. But again, I would strongly recommend against it. Too many things can go wrong in the process. I agree with you on EBMM’s approach to maintain brand exclusivity and would add that a possible pickguard change and the addition of Dunlop Strap Locks are the only mods these basses need. And maybe your string of choice.
