EBMM StingRay Special Club

Looking forward to the new colours. They've already had a "smoked chrome" in the EBMM Vault. Looks cool:

Speaking of Smoked Chrome…

I snagged this “1 of 5 made” Stingray 4 SLO Special in Smoked Chrome finish with roasted maple neck and few months ago and simply love it! This is the 3rd Stingray I’ve owned over the years and the 1st one I haven’t put down, lost interest and sold after a little while. The 1.5” jazz neck profile and updated preamp is exactly what I’ve been missing She’s a keeper!!!

P.S. I wasn’t feelin’ the standard blk/wht gloss pickguard that came on the bass, so I immediately made a tracing and sent it to WD Custom Pickguards and had one made in clear acrylic and one in matt black ;)

Wow. Somehow I like the matte black better. Never would have thought that!

That changes my mind , I like that! The clear pg is where it’s at!

I'm also really digging that clear pg. I think I might have to get one of those for my plumpkin stingray.

If there is one thing I don’t like about the SR5 is the huge PG, they have all these great finishes and cover it up with that huge PG. if they would just use the traditional oval one like that we could all get the clear one,
I’ve always found it odd that they based the 5 string design on the Sihouette guitar, but called it a Stingray. I’d much rather a 5 string version of the Stingray 4 (which I’m aware they did do eventually)

I haven't taken a look under my SR5 but is there any cuts in the surface that the pickguard is trying to hide, or is just used so they don't have to figure out an awkward plate to cover the knobs and the pickup selector lever?

The routings in the SR5 requires the larger pick guard. If you like the SR4 style, look for a SR5 Classic — out of production now; maybe they will come back. They have the same pick guard and control plate as the SR4s, but only available with a 2-band preamp, one pickup and a non-contoured body.

Yes the base SR5 has a front route for the controls, but my SRS5 fretless has a rear route with no PG so they can do it. Hey Scott you listening ;-)

After only quite recently becoming more than a casual observer of MusicMan instruments I always assumed that a StingRay would have an oval pickguard and a control plate and I admit I was a bit surprised that the Ray 5 wasn't just a Stingray with another string though I have seen the SR5 Classic.

I love my stingray special, but the one thing I would change would be the neck of the SLO special (roasted maple of course).
