The neck on my Special 5 seems stiff as can be. I assume that the ebony fingerboard can only be seen as a positive contribution to this

Don't know how much 'board's wood contributes to neck stability, but mine has an ebony 'board, too.

The neck on my Stingray Special HH also is straight as an arrow and seems pretty stiff as well. I've only had it for a few weeks, but the roasted necks on my SBMM Stingrays are also pretty solid. So no complaints here yet, knock on roasted wood.

Real straight neck is a good thing, unless it starts to back bow...and if the frets are perfectly leveled - and that's the case of mine (our, I bet!) 'Rays

Took my new Special to its first rehearsal, sounded great, however the E string was a bit over powering compared to the other strings. I’m assuming this is a simple pickup adjustment?

Either a pickup height adjustment or a bridge saddle adjustment I would guess.

i lowered the E side of the pickup a bit....ill try it tomorrow when i can play on it with some volume. I bought it used, new to me, so still in the process of getting the right set up, strings and such...

My B string was a little quiet compared to the other strings and a pickup height adjustment did the trick for me

Anyone here interested in trading Your SPECIAL for a 2010, CLASSIC, 2 EQ? White, faded to a real "buttery" yellow. Tort guard, and in pretty darn good condition with OHSC? Highly flamed, vintage Maple tinted neck/fretboard.

I'm looking for an ebony fretboard, and black hardware. NO Red, or Blue basses.

That actually varies. Of all my basses, the SRS4H with the roasted maple neck needs the most frequent truss rod adjustments, pretty much every time the weather changes a little.

Wow, this has not been my experience either. I live in New England and ice owned my 4HH for 2 years now. I've yet to have to make a truss ros adjustment.

Oh, what a difference a day makes...

I hope I don't lose all my new StingRay friends , but I rather abruptly changed course late last night. A listing for a bass that was neck and neck in the running with a StingRay Special came up on Reverb at about 11pm, and I jumped on it. Price and condition were too good—I'll put up an NBD post as soon as I receive it.

That being said, thanks so much to everyone who contributed their thoughts to my thoughts. I know a StingRay Special will be in my collection at some point... just not now.

The other one didn’t work out—I ended up selling it. The StingRay Special is my one and only!

It’s called Ghostwood, and the white pearl pickguard is stock. Always wanted an instrument with a white pearl pickguard, and I’m glad it came with my first StingRay.

Nice, big fan of the ghostwood finish here. I almost got one but went with a different finish. I do feel the ghostwood is subtle and underrated.

Yeah, Ghostwood was nowhere to be found on my “Desired Color” list—I didn’t even know it was an option—but the deal that came up on Reverb brought the color to my attention. Heh.

I find that there are some EBMM combos that don’t work for me, ex. Speed Blue body, rosewood fretboard, black hardware. This combo, though, seemed to be greater than the sum of its parts, and, in person, it’s even better. Subtle is a great way to put it.

Which finish did you go with?

When I was initially attracted to the ghostwood finish, it was from a local retailer that had posted this pic:

It's weird because as far as I can tell, the ghostwood basses only came with a roasted maple fretboard but this was advertised as having rosewood. I have a hunch that it is a photoshop mistake, maybe MM sent them a photo before it was released and they never updated it but I like the look with the rosewood fretboard.

Which actually went a long way in convincing me of its… um, viability, I guess?

I’m a Fender fanboy, for sure, and I loved the Inca Silver finish when I first saw it, so when this StingRay came across my radar, and I needed to convince myself a bit, I thought of good ol’ Inca Silver.

Yeah, the rosewood looks nice on that, but I always had a feeling that if I had ordered it, it would arrive with a maple fretboard. Not that I have a problem with that though. I'm sure I would have loved it but the pink sparkle came available and I couldn't say no to that.
