EBMM StingRay Special Club

Never owned a bass with a painted neck so I don’t have an opinion on how they feel. But, with that pretty a finish, it only seems right to cover as much of the bass as possible with it, including the neck and headstock.
I just noticed the bridge on your BB. Is that typical for a BB bridge, giving the saddle for the B string more room to travel forward and back?
Yeah they used that bridge for awhile. On the recent models they switched to a more conventional bridge.
I haven't noticed any difference
Yeah seems pointless to me honestly. Intonation and sound are better on my Stingray's B string than the BB. But the BB B string is solid.
Been a long time since I've posted anything in here, but I enjoy keeping up with all the Special activity. Good lookin' sparkles goin' on that leave me extremely conscious of my being on the total other end of the spectrum...I'm a bit jealous! I don't see a lot of the natural Specials out there, so figured I'd drop y'all a line to show off mine. Carry on!
Natural Stingray is always classic!
I'm not a sparkle owner - yet - but I am a huge burst/natural fan and that's a beautiful instrument. And you're right, we don't see a lot of natural Specials here.

Hold on to that classic beauty. Sadly they did not make them for too long due to the ash shortage.
I think that changed since 2019 or so to 'select hard wood'. Early ones were always ash IIRC.
It started out that way. But not anymore. While my Fretless BFR Fuego is figured ash, my Amethyst Sparkle Im guessing is alder. I dont hear the scooped mids of ash. It sounds warmer compared to the Ash/ebony aqua sparkle 5H that I owned.
All of this works out in my favor. I prefer wood like alder, mahogany, and basswood on my basses . Only fretless, I was surprised at how good the ash sounds. Probably because I tend to boost the lows and mids on fretless to get that mwah blooming just right. Its so nice when the ash figuring is allowed to show with translucent finishes.

looked up the serial numbers on both of mine and it doesn’t say the body wood, only the fretboard wood and hardware color, etc

Im pretty sure both of yours are ash. I think they limit translucent finishes to ash. That grain looks like ash to me. And I know the aqua sparkles are all ash/ebony. I had one.
I think i asked this before, but how do you actually know the aqua sparkles were ash?
they were listed as such in the specs at the time. the change did not occur until the next batch of color options were released.

I know we have talked about strings a lot here. I tried some Fodera strings on another bass and really liked them. They are round core but were a little higher tension than the DRs I'm used to. I think I am going to try the light gauge Fodera (120-40) on my Stingray. Hoping by going lighter gauge the tension will be the same as the DRs 125-45.
So far my findings are-
Stock EB strings- sound great, but don't last long
DR Sunbeams- sounded good at first but didn't like the tone as they aged
EB Cobalt rounds- a little too harsh for me, but not bad
DR Hi Beams- sounded great and lasted a long time. My biggest gripe with Hi Beams is their B string doesn't sound as good above the 10th fret or so. This wasn't the case for the other DR (especially the Pure Blues which always sound great high on the B string)
DR Pure Blues- my favorite so far, sound great right away and last a good amount of time, wish they lasted as long as Hi Beams for me. I see a lot of people think Pure Blues are mellow as they are nickel, but they sound more like stainless than nickel to me.
I'll report back once I try the Fodera stainless steel strings. Anyone try them on a Stingray here?

This bass is gorgeous.
Can somebody explain the difference between this Special "H" and a classic? Specifically the electronics and eq?
