EBMM StingRay Special Club

I’ve been in the SS club a few times over, but recently found myself un-Special and wishing that I wasn’t. :laugh:

I love most things about the StingRay Specials, but I’ve ended up moving the ones I’ve owned along due to other basses being in more consistent rotation.

I sold the last of my Specials about a month ago, and I was feeling the absence. I was cruising the Guitar Center used site, which is a favorite activity of mine. What I found was what was listed as an “Aqua Burst” StingRay for $1329.99 in excellent condition. What I could see from the single, terrible, grainy picture was that it was actually a StingRay Special in Frost Green Pearl. Based on the fact that was over $1000 less than the street price of a new one… :smug:

So…a few days later, I’m back in the club. It’s basically a new bass…plastic still on the pickguard, pristine paint.

Bonus…it’s really light, too…lighter than my recently departed 5H by an ounce…

None of my other StingRay Specials have had a neck pocket gap like this. I know that it’s just cosmetic…the E and G strings are equidistant from the ends of the fretboard, and the strings are aligned over the pickup poles, so there is no need to loosen neck bolts and pull the neck to one side.

I’m just gonna play it and stifle my OCD… :bassist:

If Musicman started doing metal flake finishes like G&L does, I may never buy another burst again!

Same thing happened to my Special, but EBMM was able to correct it after I gave them info for the dealer I bought it from (NOS). Without that it could be harder. They did say there is a way of doing it if you remove the pickguard and pickup, there is some info under there they can ID with.

EBMM told they make mistakes sometimes in the database

I know it's the Christmas/Hanukkah season and everyone is busy with family, but it's been real quiet here for a few days. So why not post another gratuitous Special picture just to spark some activity? :D

The weather here today is changing quickly and we will likely have the coldest day of the year in these parts by tomorrow. However, this picture was taken this past summer when we played an outdoor festiaval on the HOTTEST day of the year - temp was in the upper 90s and the humidity was near 100%. We had to stop a few songs early during our last set because of lightning and we got everything torn down and about half of it loaded in our cars when the skies just opened up. We got hit with a torrential downpour but, luckily, nothing got damaged. It really sucked at the time, but we laugh about it now.

Love this Special! Hopefully I'll get some new pictures (and in color) from our New Year's Eve gig.

There’s no shame in doing so. Naming instruments can be traced back to various traditions such as the christening of ships (sea & air), the cataloguing of Stradivarius instruments, etc.

Naturally people assigned nicknames for all sorts of things that they have a long/meaningful history with. Examples are endless ;)

Personally I’ve only named one instrument; an old Les Paul copy I had in the early 80’s, that at any volume, would feedback like crazy! I learned how to control it, and over time it became known as the “Feedback King”. I do miss that thing…
