The description I’ve used is that it’s Jazz-like, but fuller, with a little more definition (than both pickups on a passive Jazz on full), and less scooped than a typical Jazz (again, with both pickups full on). To me Position 2 is closer to a typical Jazz sound than Position 4, probably because of the wider spacing between the coils that get used. But Position 4 is ultimately its own unique tone to me. Given the basses I’ve owned, I’m not sure I’ve had another bass that had a pair of coils in the positions they’re in on an HH Stingray.

I’m also a Jazz fan and have two that I like a lot, so that's probably a factor in why I used Jazz basses in my description. Others would likely describe the sound differently.

I was thinking 60’s Jazz on steroids . It’s so rich and thick and I love it played pick style. Dare I say it’s maybe even got hints of a Thunder Bird? Maybe if you crossed the two? Anyway, I like it.

Position 2 is more 70s Jazz bass like. I’ve heard some say Rickenbacker but I wouldn’t really know. Never played one. I don’t make use of 2 too much myself.

I've never played a Thunderbird so I can't comment on that. But 60s Jazz on steroids is a pretty good summation.

EDIT: I don't use a pick often but, when I do, I tend to use Position 5, neck pickup only. To me, that sounds kind of like a Precision on steroids (not exactly, but just describing the tone) and sounds great with a pick. I mostly use that for position for our more straight ahead rock songs, whether I use a pick or not.

I really hated the looks of the Bongo when it first came out, but a few years later I played one (a 5HH) in the local Guitar Center and that changed my opinion quite a bit. I thought their looks were certainly “different” but their feel and especially their sound were outstanding. Over time, the shape/looks became much less problematic to me and recently I’ve even started to GAS over them - enough to actually want one! :eek:

I didn’t like them for years. Bought one in February. You’d have a hard time getting it out of my hands. Looks included. It’s a head turner out in general population.

I didn't like the design when Bongo's were first released either. But they grew on me now I have 2. I also have a Stingray Special 5HH.

I also like playing position 4 pick style. I like the attack I get from it as well as the tone. It's become my favorite.

Not that it bothers me personally that much since i wasn't a fan of this years finishes ... but were they a very limited run? The Ernieball website used to have the color swatches listed in the colors for the stingray along with the others, but they now appear to be gone as options.. but yet the banner and main splash is the seafoam one. Curious if these were limited run kinda thing.

Probably. But there seems to be plenty still available in the usual stores. At least for now.

Interesting. It was a perfect fit in my Bongo. Guess I’ll wait on ordering one for my new to me Special.
