EBMM StingRay Special Club

I may have a preference for the Snowy Night because I own that one but I'd change out the pick guard to black for a nice transformation. The Grape Crush is nice also, but I don't care at all for that blueish border. Some I've seen have a darker purple border which looks much better in my opinion. I don't understand Musicman's inconsistency here. Also I'd prefer it with a maple neck and painted head stock.
I never liked this finish until I saw yours with he black pickguard. Now it looks right. I bet a mirror or brushed silver would look great on that bass too.
That purple /blue border you speak of .... I think it flips according to how the light hits it. The EBMM colors really need to be experienced in person. The amount of light and how it hits them makes them look different than on video and pics. I found that out the hard way.

I've just pulled the trigger on the Grape Burst (purple). What made this so difficult is the fact that Snowy Night has a matching headstock. @cholyoke got it absolutely spot on; if the Grape Crush had a matching headstock it would be a no contest (at least in our opinion!)
It was a coin toss really! The photo below swayed my decision towards the Grape Crush.

I love the black hardware, specially on the darker roasted headstock. It's a sick color for the bass overall. The snowy one is beautiful too but to me it's the safer option.
I don't think you can get amethyst . That purple sparkle looks lighter and it's called lavender sparkle.
I think Aged White Pearl would look good on the Snowy Night as well.
I agree. I bought an Charcoal Sparkle 4H back when they were first released in 2018 and loved the combination of the dark roasted headstock and black hardware. I loved that bass and regretted selling it so I bought another new Charcoal Sparkle 4H. Unfortunately I just could not get along with the second one (oddly enough) and sold it off eventually.

I have this hazy memory of noticing it a while ago, but I can't remember if I actually asked about. That's a cool looking piece to the left of your Stingray, but the wood looks too … "new"? … and what looks like an LCD panel make me think it's not actually an antique radio. What is it?

So I have an 2018 HH that's almost identical to the natural one on page one of this thread.
I'd never had a MM before and so it was a total revelation when I bought it.
Then I played a festival and had requested a MM as part of the back line. And bit did they deliver. I got an 81.
So that rocked my world.
Now I'm on the lookout for a fretless H, but also hoping someone here can clear up some basic facts I'm having trouble nailing down.
Any help is appreciated.
How Do the different eras vary?
Clearly the '81 was radically different to the '18, but are all vintage ones in good nick better than all modern ones? How consistent is what's on the used market?
I can't really play basses first, and so if I don't like one I'll have to flip it, etc.
Are their good and bad years for MM?
Is all Pre EB better?
Is there better years for fretless?
Oh and finally, how much is down to electronics? And are the aftermarket electronics really any good compared to the original electronics on a vintage one?

I have not ever tried aftermarket electronics for a Ray so can't comment on that. In terms of good/bad years, EBMM is pretty consistent and is not known for any particular bad years from what I've heard and experienced.
I don't think I've ever heard pre-EB being particularly better or anything, probably just more notable from a collectors standpoint.
The link above is going to give you a lot more info about the incremental changes that have been made through the years in terms of the bridge, neck bolts, pickup magnets, etc.
Whether the newer Rays or the vintage ones are best, that's debatable. What I can say is that the new SR Specials are generally a lot lighter than the older Rays which are known to be quite heavy.
It's an genuine antique radio that belonged to my grandfather. I hated to do it but I refinished it myself only because it was in such awful shape being around 100 years old being kept in the damp basement. Thanks for the compliment on the Stingray.
