Black is best IMHO as the cream doesn’t quite match. Beautiful bass!

EBMM StingRay Special Club

I ended up keeping the matte black on it. I prefer it because it matched the control cover’s matte black over the original shinny black pickguard.
I really dig the creme color though. I’m glad I ordered it regardless… maybe one day I’ll switch it.

Hello Stingrayers, hope all is well. I'm thinking about transitioning from G&L to EBMM Special 5HH as my main player and wanted to check in here with you all for folks who perhaps have done similar transitions. (I've read a few threads, and apparently, it's common?!).
My main issue is that my G&L basses's (L-1000 and Kiloton, both five strings) output is so hot, even with volume at or below 80%, I'm clipping effects and preamps. It's incredibly frustrating. I love the idea of a double humbucker bass with pickup configurations to approximate P and J tones. It's what I wish the L-2500 would be, but I didn't dig that as much when I tested it in a store compared to what the single pickup L-1000 or Kiloton are.
I guess what I'm wondering is:
- How does the Special 5HH interact with effects and outboard preamps? Does the 18V pre and overall output clip downstream?
- I haven't really liked single volume basses in the past (either with pan controls or pickup selectors.) What are people's experiences with a single volume control in the 5HH? If you favor a two pickup tone, with full neck tone with a little bridge brightness, what settings do you use?
- This may be silly, but here we go: In 25+ years of bass playing, I've only owned one active instrument before (Sandberg p bass) and even then I used it always in passive mode. Any stories from folks about transitioning from passive to active in a main player bass?
I don't like hoarding gear so I'd likely sell basses and other gear if I decide to go with a Special 5HH. A trade would be ideal though, as a "risk free" way of seeing if it's right for me.

I just followed the Thomann's link. It said "No Longer Available" so I'm assuming they either sold out or announced earlier than they had planned.
I can't speak to 5HH but my 4HH & 5H while they have the ability to be loud and thunderous they both work well with my 2 pedalboards. As well as studio rack & board tools and effects.
Thank you, @Maxi Funkl ! That's really helpful. Effects are a big part of the music I'm making now so this feature is crucial.
They are very different sounding basses, the pickup position is very different (between L series and Stingray). I'd first experiment that you like the sound. Neck pickup of the L is such a good p bass tone, that is a lot harder to get on a Stingray HH honestly.
Have you tried the M series G&L? Might be a better fit, they are tamer than the L output wise
I played a L2000 and an M2500 as my main basses for awhile. I love my Stingray but it is a very different beast. Mine is a 5H too, but that's because I wasn't a fan of the HH as much.
I use to own two G&L M2000's and I know what you mean about the very hot output. I no longer own those basses. I own three EBMM Stingray Special 4 HH's and the output is nowhere near as hot as the G&L's. Matter of fact I wouldn't call them hot at all. The 18 volt preamp gives them more headroom, not more volume. I don't think you'll have any issues running a Special through effects or outboard preamps.
The link seems to work for me. In stock, 3199 euros. The colour is not really my cup of tea though.
