EBMM StingRay Special Club

I was an H guy for quite a while. I took the 5HH plunge and there's no going back!
Well, did the first gig with the new fretless 5HH last night. I brought the fretted 5H, too, which I only ended up playing on one tune. They look so great on a double stand together on stage!
The HH is sooo perfect if you're in a funky jazz context. We play some standards and we also play a lot of early 70's funk jazz. Position 4 works great for the older stuff and the classic Ray p/u absolutely kills it on the funk stuff. I'm so glad I went ahead with the HH.
I am finding my intonation's not as precise as I was on my Stambaugh 5. Still trying to figure out why... - it's not the bass! I'm just adjusting to a new thing, I guess, but I'll get there.

Y'all, this is my first Stingray of any kind, and holy wow does it rip.
I know this isn’t a Special but all of us here appreciate Stingrays. I got to see this one last night

They're in Philly on Sunday night. Our guitar player is going, but Sundays are one of the days when i'm caring for my Dad, so I'm not able to go. Hopefully there will be another opportunity to go.
Hi everyone, hope all is well. Anybody have experience playing rosewood and maple Stingray Special 5HHs? Any tonal differences? I know in a blind test I may not able to tell the difference, though anytime I think about a Stingray tone, I immediately recall the maple snap of Bernard Edwards and others. Fwiw, I rarely slap, and mostly play fingerstyle funk (The Meters, Headhunters, for example) and improvised music. Thanks!
Hey @dave64o i was on the 2nd row but was in front of Steve Vai (I’m not complaining), it was down to the wire as to if I was going to make it there with all the Helene damage. So glad I got to go and experience this.

Hey, I didn't realize you're down in that area. I hope you guys didn't suffer too much damage where you are.
My son is in FL, but he said where he is in Palm Bay (right on the eastern coast, about 40 minutes below Kennedy Space Center) they didn't really get much rain or wind and only lost power for a few seconds. My brother in Atlanta got a lot of both, but luckily no flooding close to him and none of trees in the woods behind their house came down. I know that a lot of other people weren't nearly as lucky.
@LadyLoveStingRay5, how did Orlando make out? I didn't see much about your area on the news, so I hope that means you were unscathed.

I was stationed in Orlando in '68 and '69 before going to Vietnam. Had some good times there!
I was stationed in Cocoa Beach AFTER Vietnam ('71 and part of '72). Had some real good times there as well!
So I am about to purchase my first Stingray and it’s a Special H 5 in Snowy Night finish. I have always admired music man’s but for some reason never owned one. Since this is my first one what can I expect as far tone and feel go? Are there any things I should be on the look out for. What do you think of that particular finish?

Personally, I love the feel. The way my SR5HH's hang on me, where my getting and plucking hands naturally go to, the width and shape of the necks, and the balance all seem to fit me very well. I've sold other basses I liked a lot simply because they didn't fit me as well. Also, the Specials tend to be relatively lightweight. My SR5HH is a very comfortable 8.3 pounds, compared to my 9.5 pound ceramic SR5HH (or my 10.0 pound Big Al 5SSS!).
The tone of the Specials to me seems more like an older Stingray and with a very wide tonal pallette. I love my ceramic SR5HH equally, but it has a noticeably more aggressive character.
I think the Snowy White is a gorgeous finish, especially with the matching headstock. I've never owned one, but I'd better it would look fantastic under stage lights.
