This has been my go to rig for a bit now. I tried various round wounds on the Special and in the end I like Slinkys the best on the Ray. I did switch back to Cobalt Flats though recently and they just really seem to love this bass. They intonate and hold tuning really well, and for my play style I really like the reduced fretboard and finger noise, but they have plenty of punch. I run the on board EQ at the detents except for volume.
I am really enjoying cobat flats on my Special as well. It's like they were meant for this bass.
That's such a handsome bass. I, too, adore the cobalt flats on my ray: it just speaks in every way exactly how I want.

Thank you, and yes same here. They add a nice growl, and the mids presence I like versus the roundwounds I was trialing.
Yes agreed! I feel that way for Slinky Roundwounds too if I want those string types that is haha.
NEW Bass Day!
Ordered on the 11th Oct, arrived today the 21st Jan . (3 and a bit months of torture! )
ok after checking it out for 25 minutes here's my 1st impressions,
its light - Really Light ! - so much lighter than the 10+ pound anchor my 2010 Stingray classic was !
I asked them to supply a hard case if they had any - but it was supplied with a mono case - and, I'm actually impressed ! - the Mono case is SO much lighter than the EBMM Stingray hard case and it seems robust - sturdy even ! - and very good quality. I think I'm a convert.
The flame maple is gorgeous! Worth the extra $
The SLO neck - its perfect - silky and fast, not too wide, but has a good thickness. The frets are immaculate.
The paint, fit and finish, is top shelf - the tuners feel funny if you are used to the old clover leaf tuners - but I like them.
The switchgear and knobs and pots - are exactly what I like - I like pots that have some heft to them.
The pickguard - errr I might have made a mistake there - Ive got an aged Perloid on order. We will see if the red one grows on me
The strings sound good - but are so rough feeling - I might have to put on some Elixirs.

So I went down the CDE route because I know that a Jazz type neck is far more comfortable for me to play, and I like the way a stingray sounds, but dislike the clank, so a Stingray special seems to tick all the boxes. This bass has met my expectations, its not cheap but SO worth it! I have a stable of about 6 bassess which excel in one aspect or another, but usually something is not quite right for me ( eg I got aPbass with a jazz neck, but the neck feels a bit too thin ). So far with this bass, the only things i might change are the strings and the pickguard. everything else looks, feels, and sounds ACE
Tomorrow Is band practice - so I'll see how it goes .

Beauty! Enjoy it. I agree about the pick guard but I'm a "never tort" guy.
WOW that's a beauty. Glad you are digging it (who wouldn't?). And it's unanimous about the pickguard. I'm not sure what color guard would look good on that color bass body.
I'm going to try Aged Pearloid - Im hoping the slight yellow colour will complement the body wood colour
I just installed a set of Elixir strings - no dramas! -( I like the feel of Elixirs! ) I think the elixirs has less tension - so a tweak of the truss rod might be in order - but I'll let things settle for a day
Ditch the tort. The aged pearl will be a winner. Great call on the flamed slo neck and the purple sunset Special.

Played my BFR fretless this last Sunday at a newer church. First time taking it out of the house lol. Sound guy murdered my tone. Took all highs and most of the mids out to make it what he said “sounds great out here”. I got over it quickly. I’m not there to stroke my own ego and self gratification… but still… really dude?
Got a set of D’Addario nylon tape wounds for Christmas from my wife. Slapped em on a couple weeks ago. Love the “papery” texture of the strings. I don’t know how else to describe it. The sound is, mellow and woody. Like a hollow body bass almost. It’s ok. Livens up a lot by cranking the mids on the bass and running in series. B string has wolfy overtones 3rd-7th “fret”. NOT a fan of that. Tried reseating string to make sure it wasn’t twisted a few times. Made it worse once and then got it back to “normal”.
Just ordered a set of nickel Elixirs with a Tapered B. We’ll see how those go. I quite like the Regular Slinkys that came on it. But despite my trying really hard to watch how hard I was pressing down, grooves in the fretboard were appearing especially on the B string 1-4th fret area. I know I know… just play the thing. Still, if I can mitigate the grooves and still get that awesome rounds growl, I’ll be a happy camper.
… unless another sound guy “knows better”.

Nothing is more challenging than being at the mercy of the sound guy .
Strings are such a personal preference . When faced with the same dilemma, TI flats and / or EBMM slinky ( cobalt) flats would be my recommendations. I think you already went down that road . From what you are saying …. I’d suggest the Cobalt flats . Keep hunting, you’ll find something .
I was playing my 5H Amethyst Sparkle for a session yesterday . I had the mids boosted and trebles slightly backed off . I’m usually playing just the opposite setting. That bass was growling like a beast !! I was pleasantly surprised. Pickup setting was #1. Strings, eq, pickup settings all make a difference.

Cobalt flats are off the table. Briefly tried a set of TI’s on the BFR…Those were a no go either. Flats really ain’t my thing.

I hope you can find some strings that you like that are not flats that won’t chew into your fingerboard .
Haven't checked in in a bit - I sent my custom Stingray 5 in to EBMM due to a pickup issue about a month ago now. I had no signal in positions 2 or 3 and the tone of position one was not the usual one. Since I had only gotten the bass a week before the issue popped up, they paid for shipping back to them and replaced the pickup. Even with the holiday season, they turned it around super quickly and I've been very busy playing it ever since! This is easily in the top two instruments I've ever owned, with the only contender being a custom Elrick Evolution Hybrid I had years ago. For this being a factory/assembly line type of instrument, that's incredibly impressive!

I knew they would make it right !! EBMM really does rival boutique quality. I think they are money well spent , they hold their value , and you can sometimes get some great deals on the used market.
