I'm the one who likes chunky necks, so I guess I'd like an option for something more old-school. Less sports car, if you know what I mean.

Oh interesting I thought the SLO neck was more similar to the USA Sterling, which is definitely thinner back to front than the Stingray (the reason I didn't like the Sterling 4H I had).

NBD for me today! My third StingRay Special. My first was a 5HH in Ocean Sparkle which I sold fairly quickly for a couple of reasons. My second is a Pacific Blue Burst 4HH, rosewood fingerboard, which I absolutely love. Which led me to placing an order with the CDE for a fretless.

My Blue Dream CDE fretless StingRay 4HH arrived today. I'm delighted with it. The color looks exactly as I'd expected after seeing jamesog's pictures of his Blue Dream fretted 4H. I love how the chrome hardware pops against the body. I still wish the CDE didn't restrict fretless fingerboards to pau ferro because I would preferred ebony, but it does look good and more importantly, of course, sounds great. It arrived almost perfectly in tune to DGCF, per my setup choice and with the Cobalt Flatwounds I requested post order. I've played it a lot this evening, and I'm very happy with the sound and the overall feel. It's also really light at around 8.5 lb, but feels veyr well balanced. I ordered it on August 2 and it was shipped October 23, so it took 10-11 weeks, plus shipping time, which is well within not bad at all, well within the 4-6 months the website FAQ says. So, overall, I'm really stoked with my CDE buying experience and would definitely order again.

No, I could not. I wanted ebony, but it’s not an option. The CDE only offers pau ferro for fretless necks. If you’re ordering fretted, yes you can choose ebony or rosewood, but not when you select fretless.

Thought I’d ask what strings are you all using these days on your Specials?

My stock Ray with roasted maple fingerboard (which I recently sold) was sporting GHS Bass Boomers (the regular hex core) and I thought they sounded (and felt) great!

My “custom design experience” Ray with ebony fb had Slinky’s, which I didn’t care for too much, so changed to GHS Bassics. They’re good strings, and sound good, but are a tad too bright (for my preferences). I’m thinking of next trying some SIT nickel Foundations (rounds), or some GHS Round Core Bass Boomers that I have on hand.

I have D'Addario Chromes (ECB81-5) on mine at the moment. Before this, I was using Cobalt Flats (2816). Honestly not sure which strings I like better, they both have their benefits. Chromes feel a little nicer under the fingers, but they don't have quite the same zing as Cobalt Flats.

I'm a big fan of both SIT Foundations and Dunlop Superbright on the Special. I prefer stainless but the nickel are great too

Bought a used stingray 5 special, happily got home and found that the saddles bottom out, neck perfectly straight, but the string height at G is 3/32 and B 4/32….

I can get 2/32 on G and 3/32 on B on my other basses, and even lower string height on some. This is disappointing.

Have ordered a shim, but how could EBMM allow this out of the factory.
