Eden CXC- 300 212 new Member

Long time lurker of Talk Bass. Just decided to register. Biggup! 6 string reggae bass player here. from Jamaica.
Just went to Atomic Music in Beltsville Maryland. Low and behold I found an Eden CXC 300 series 212 hybrid. Snatched it because the price was $325. With tax US $343.00.

She works but needs some love and attention.

1) Pops in the lower 12" when you turn the volume up high. I may take her to PROTECH (the local tech folks that I visit whenever I'm in need in the States) or maybe just buy a replacement 12 and gently replace it myself.

2) Dirty, seems like it has been in a basement or garage corner for years. The cones have stains and a little mildew here and there. As if juice or beer was spilled on it. Using a tooth brush and doing some cleaning now. Gonna vacuum and disinfect the cabinet fur.

3) Going to see about lubricating or changing the fan. It's a bit noisey.

4) The screws have rust. So I am figuring this somehow was in the rain or mist. Or maybe a damp basement. Going to buy some new screws and some lubricant.

All the knobs works. The jacks all work fine. Something is rattling inside so I will open her up fully. So far I have only taken off the grate.

This gem says 1999 on it. In the past I have seen the eden 210xlt combo version in a few places, which is short, square and heavy. This one is rectangular, vertically with two port holes on the left and right middle. Has two wheels on the back. Somewhat heavy, I gather around 60 pounds. I will weigh it to make sure. I can pick it up easily enough when I moved it into and out of the vehicle.

Jah know, I love the low B string. I didn't need this new amp but I bonded with her in the store. I said, "I'm taking you to a loving home."
So whoever once owned this piece rest assured she will be treated well. Gonna fix her up like brand new.

The CXC-300-212 combo came out in 1999. However, Eden didn't out out a catalog in 1999 or in 2000, but it was in the 2001 catalog and I've attached a copy of that in pdf format to this post for you and you'll find the CXC-300 212 combo on page 11 with the specs on the bottom of the page. I've also sent along a pdf copy of the owner's manual.That's a cool combo and those are very nice sounding amps. The CXC-300 will put out 300-watts into 4Ω and 175-watts into 8Ω. You'll need to add an 8Ω extension speaker to it to put the 4Ω load on the amp and unleash the rest of the watts. Eden speaker cabs are sensitive cabs that get loud quickly with small amounts of power. I would expect it to be all you need for small venues and most medium-sized venues.

1.) About the speakers, don't try to "just replace it yourself". All of those speakers were designed by David Nordschow (founder of Eden) and the cabinet is specifically made for them. Those speakers were made at Edens factory, in-house. If you throw something else in there, they may sound like crap, or they might lose half of the power handling capability. If it is the speaker and you can't get one, then call up Eminence, tell them what you have and see if they have anything similar. In about 2009 Eden turned over it's speaker manufacturing from their own factory to Eminence. So they gave them all the T&S parameters and the inside dimensions for the cabs as well as Eden's in-house speakers.. It took Eminence about 3 tries to come up with the perfect match using their shop in Kentucky, but it was the perfect match and met all specifications, power-handling ratings, etc. If anyone will have an idea of what might work, Eminence would be the place to check. Be ready to give them all the outside and inside specs if you can.

There is however a real problem with trying to find a different speaker for it. The speaker(s) in that combo are coaxial speakers which means they have two voice coils for one speaker. One is for the woofer and the other is for the smaller cone within the woofer. Unfortunately I don't recall if they just used one of the coaxial speaker as one of the speakers or both of them and can't tell from pics in the catalog. Having the cone within a cone instead of using a separate tweeter horn allows them to give great sound throughout the high mids and highs without needing a separate tweeter horn, so the cab is more compact than a normal 212 cab. It also has better dispersion with 100° dispersion instead of the more common 60° dispersion using a separate tweeter horn.

I have a couple of Eden EX-112 cabs and use just one of them for small venues and used 2 of them for medium and large venues for about a year and a half. Mine have a whizzer cone inside, which is a cone within a cone, but not a separate voice coil like the coax in your CXC-300-212 has. The Coaxial Speakers are considered better speakers than a plain whizzer cone, but the Eden 112's I have sound fantastic. Here's my Eden EX-112 cab in which you can see the High-mids and Highs cone within the woofer cone: The Coaxial speakers in your amp should look similar.

Also, it may very be that there is nothing wrong with the speaker but with the way you have it EQ'd. I've attached a pdf copy of the owners manual for you to this post and you should read it if you haven't already read one. Pay particular attention to the section starting at the end of page 4 and carrying over to page 5 entitled "Setting your Level". To get the cleanest clearest and loudest sound out of your CXC-300, you will need to set up your gain correctly, and it will vary from bass to bass.

DO NOT run the master all the way up and adjust the gain for the output level. That is the worst way and noisiest way to run an Eden amp. Instead you need to set the gain level correctly first and that will sent the cleanest, clearest, lowest noise, and strongest signal to the power section to be amplified. That will get you the characteristic "Eden Sound". You control the volume of Eden amps by using the master control, which adjusts how much power is being sent to the speaker cab(s). Besides sending the lowest noise level signal to the power section, it also enable to amp to run at lower temperatures because it's not working so hard to put out the power.

3.) Best to replace the fan instead of trying to lubricate it. There are quieter fans available now than there were in 1999. Since it is thermostat control, triggered by temperature, you will need to match it to the size, power, and volume of air moved. ALSO many years later Eden figured out that the fan cooled the amp better if they set it up to blow hot air out of the back of the amp instead of trying to draw cool air in. It's a very simple thing to do. You just unscrew the 4-screws holding it in place, turn it around to blow air out instead of suck air in; and screw those four screws back in.
