No, I'm not "blaming" the amp. It's just that some amps are more noisey in this department. If you listen to the samples from the basstasters site you'll hear what I mean, with the TF there is a more "clickety" fret sound at slides. Maybe not "bad" technique, maybe that's just how it sounds. Probably bad selection of words. Anyway, what I'm asking is which one "exposes" your technique more.

d-lord,

string noise is part 'n parcel of playing. its here to stay. you could try nickel strings or even flatwounds to get rid of it, but no reason to get worked up about it. besides, you could always EQ out most of that for a smoother sound.

course, while basstasters ROCKS HARD in my book, and is one of the best bass tone resources, it also shows that, bottom line, you the player should be trying these amps yourself. we all play different, and clips online only say/show/demonstrate so much.

Sure, but it's true that some amps have less string noise to the final sound, when played with same strings/bass/setup/player. The eden and TF samples on basstasters shows that (which I have also seen from personal experience and I'm sure you have as well).

This may be true, but I think that it's hard to use clips from Basstasters to illustrate it...those clips are all recorded with the amps set totally flat. Flat on the Eden may be equivilant to the Thunderfunk with a few adjustments, and vice-versa. Reguardless, as Joker said, string noise can easily be eq'd out of the sound if you want to. Its just a matter of finding the frequency its at with the semi-parametric eq that both amps have and cutting a little...

Yes, it's usually around 1K. It's just that I heard this sound in all the TFB soundclips at basstasters and, although I like the normal notes coming out of it, I don't like that sound at slides - and don't want to have 1K frequencies down all the time because of that.

Gotcha...another thing you could do with the Thunderfunk is move the timbre knob to the left just a tad...

I don't know if you can say that the the samples on basstasters shows that the TF has more or less string noise... I mean, think about it - with all the differences in playing on the day they recorded the Eden and the day they recorded the TF, and you feel confident that somehow the TF has more "string noise" than the Eden, or vise-versa? That's something you should probably figure out yourself. Play the two, swap them back and forth, try playing as quiet as possible on both, and then you might be able to say that one amp or the other emphasises the frequencies that string noise is found at. And if so, notch that down a bit.

I'd choose based on other factors, if I were you, because the basstasters site is awesome and helpful, and the best thing we have. But, Vanselus (I think) has never claimed that he was able to play exactly the same way through each amp (nor could he, realistically, right?). So take that into consideration.

No, that's why I'm asking here.
Trust me, if I could "play them both and decide for myself" I'd do it in an instant. Problem is, I live in Greece ;)

Well, in that case, I'll tell you that the TF is dead quiet while you're not playing, and sounds wonderful and warm when you are. I don't think there is any bump in the string noise freq range, as I never have a problem with it. But if you ever find you do, you can cut that range as much as 15 db with the semi-parametric eq.

Hope that helps! :)

i wrote this up for another thread, but figured it'd be better served for those searching for info on these amps, by sticking my post here:

tonally, the TFB will feel noticibly faster and quicker is a touch clearer and more open no matter how i set the EQ. the Eden, on the other hand, is more relaxed and warmer sounding. and w/ the already chewy tone of the UL cab, the eden adds even more fat and chew. and FYI, w/ my Eden WT550, i can NAIL maurice fitzgerald's tone on my live Kim Burrell CD. go figure.

EQ-wise, i give the TF the edge. i like the fact that it has a four stage semi para EQ, vs. the Eden's 3 stage. also the TF's timbre knob is amazing! not just a run 'o the mill tone knob, rather it seems to add a touch of low mids or higher mids depending on which way you twist it. terrific for adapting your rig to whatever bass, room, etc. you maybe playing. "magic" knob? sure, i'll go w/ that.

but i will say that no matter the cab, the TF's EQ was a little slight to my ears, and didnt make any dramatic changes to the sound unless turned close to 9:00 or 3:00. the Eden's EQ has a smoother taper, and is much more dramatic, satisfying my EQ jones.

and i know that KJ's loves his TF w/ his epi cabs, and its a great sound, but another amp in the uber hifi catagory you should check out is the Epifani UL502.

IMHO, brand on brand gear always sounds best to these ears, and the Epifani line is no exception. also, i found the Epi head to meld w/ your bass' onboard pre better than most other amps. take that with as much salt as you wish, but my sadowsky -> UL502 -> UL310 = WOW! also, i like the DI sound of the Epi better than the TF. a tad more open and present.

the only real downside of the Epi vs. the TF, is price, cause the Epi head is a good $300-400 more, but also, the fact that it doesnt have the "timbre" knob. course, what amp does? also, thx to the timbre knob, the TF is as plug 'n play as it gets.
