Thanks to you Kurisu....I will definitely have one up as soon as I get it (might be a couple of weeks according to Accugroove) and have had the opportunity to run the paces....I briefly played one with someone elses gear before I got the El Whappo so I know it is not going to be an El Whappo but I fully expect it to be a monster 210 cab though!!

Peace,

T

Well, I Played a gig last night with the 550 and the el whappo! We played two sets of original rock/jazz/funk, the first set I used the Tfunk, and the second set I used the HBP-1>Crest Vs650 setup.

I was liking the T-funk a lot. It is so loud! The tone shaping options are so well thought out too. Between the timbre and enhance knob, I really didn't need to use the actual EQ, besides goosing the bass knob a little. I thought all in all, it sounded great. It's clean, it cuts through really well and it's loud as hell. Then I plugged in the rack setup for the second set... and the Demeter is just undeniable. There is a definite clarity characteristic that I love about that rig that the T-funk couldn't quite hit. It's some kind of tone that is not neccesarily EQ related, just the sound of the circuitry. The Demeter is really pristine and super quick, especially for a tube pre, and the T-funk did not seem to have that quickness, which was noticeable especially when slapping.

I'm not saying at all that I disliked the T-funk. I was really impressed with it as a whole, with it's power and versatility. I just really dig that pristine quickness and depth that the demeter has, and I couldn't get there with the T-funk. It's a tough decision about what to keep, The demeter isn't nearly as flexible, but what it does, it does so well. I sure wouldn't mind shaving 30 pounds and 2 rackspaces off the rig.

Tommixx, we talked about these two rigs, does this jive with your experiences at all?

Yeah, I would definitely agree, but for me the Demeter is too much of a one trick pony....VERY good at what it does, but I like the flexibility of the T-Funk. The T-funk also has "something" that the Demeter just does not...coupled with the fact that the T-Funk sounds great with little muss or fuss and for me, it is an easy choice......not to mention the weight difference between the Demeter and a sizable Power amp (I used mine with a CA9 typically) the T-Funk is lighter, sounds as good or better (better to me) and costs significantly less than most of the other stuff out there!!

The Demeter also can NOT take over 52 volts of phantom power (regualted) while I have never had a problem with the T-Funk....I also have A/Bed 2 track and multitrack recordings done live using the T-Funk DI out and it sounds as good in that setting as my U5 (Very impressive considering the U5 is going to run you about $500 which is half the cost of the T-Funk!! AND it does not give you anything but a VERY good DI!!) It also is more flexible in that it gives you a post EQ and a Pre EQ (pass through in the form of a 1/4 out) send.....A lot of thought went into the refinement of this amp and it is in my opinion, the best thing out there at the moment....the ONLY thing that I compare it to is the Aguialr DB750.

For what its worth, I recently lost a lot of gear in a fire including my T-Funk and my DB750 along with numerous other amps and the ONLY one I am going to replace immediately is the T-Funk!! I should have my new one this week.... :hyper:

All of this is is, of course, just in my opinion and YMMV etc....

The Bottom line is I like what some other things do including the HBP-1, BUT for me at least, my all in one SOLUTION is the T-Funk!! Rock on.....

Peace,

T

I hear you. Thats a compelling arguement, and thats why it's still tough for me to decide. I wish I could keep them both.

I also recently acquired a custom tube preamp with one 6SL6 in it, basically a modified boxendall tone stack in a rack box (it's essentially the front end of a ampeg fliptop with hifi components), which sounds phenomenal, and running it into the poweramp in on the Tfunk has been wonderful, and gives that rig even more versatility. So I still have the option of having a great tube tone, even if I get rid of the demeter. This is a tough call.

I will agree that the tfunk gives almost any head a run for it's money. The only head I've played that has been better is a glock bass art, which is huge, heavy and oh so pricey. Even the 750 is only marginally better than the T-funk, and that head is the cream for sure.

The timbre knob is just pure magic by the way. The voicing is so intellegent on that. Same with the enhance knob. Those two knobs provide almost all the tonal options you could want.

Figured I would post my decision, first I want to thank all of you for your input. Ken Jung met me at LDS and we did an A/B between the two with an Epi 310UL. They are both sweet. If the cost was the same, I would probably choose the Thunderfunk, the High end was a little more natural. And the timbre control was a great one touch tone knob. The eden was a bit "warmer". They are both great amps, and I can't imagine a "working pro" needing more amp then either one. LDS gave me a great price on the Eden, and I already own the eden bag. So the cost difference was substantial. Any way I put a deposit on the Eden. I honestly don't believe I'll miss my db750, great head, but the 58 lbs, weight (not even close to the 47 in catalog) will not be missed.

I'd love to be able to chime in on this thread and give out some great info. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the TFunk but hopefully that will soon change. I currently use a Navigator > CA9 setup.

I love it when the band is playing. I hate it when the band isn't playing. I find myself constantly turning on and off my CA9 because the hiss of the navigator is so damn loud(I even have my treble pot turned down a bit to try and counteract this). Other than that I love the eden. I only bought it less than a month ago and I am already having the urge to test a TFunk. The reviews from everyone make it seem unreal and the fact that it is dead silent almost has me sold right there. I need to e-mail Dave Funk and find some sort of way to a/b my rig. I might have to sacrifice some power to get a great amp that is silent when i'm not playing but it'll probably be worth it to me in the long run.

Wow, that does not sound right at all. I never experienced anything like this with my Navigator.

Yeah, I was hoping that this wouldn't be the case. I purchased a Metro combo a few years back and returned it about a week later because of the high pitch hiss that accompanied the on light. I thought that it might have been the Eden cab or maybe an issue with the metro itself. Much to my dismay I'm getting the same treble hiss out of my Navigator > CA9 > TRI210L setup. It really bothers me. I love the sound of my setup. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if there is a bad component somewhere. I'd love to keep the same wattage that I have but I'm seriously considering testing out a ThunderFunk. If I liked it I'd probably have to sell off my CA9 and Navigator, but at least I'd have an amp that didn't hiss when it is on. :(

Do you know what the problem might be?

Bad CA9 input?

Bad Eden out?

I dunno

There's been lot's of posts about high end hiss from Eden stuff, especially the older models. I had a 400 quite a while ago and did notice that it was not as quiet as other heads, but not to the point where it was a big problem. I like the sound of the Eden stuff a lot, but the Thunderfunk is dead quiet!

KJung,

I've read it all and it is music to my ears :p I just bought this Navigator new about a month ago. With the settings I would like to use the treble at (never higher than 1 or 2 o'clock) I can get a pretty loud hiss. It completely disappears with the mix but when everyone is silent it is quite noticeable. I'd much rather it not be there but I'll put up with it for a while because I LOVE the sound I get out of this beast of a rig when it is rolling. I would probably switch to a TFunk setup but I'd be losing way too much power for me to justify losing a CA9 and a new Navigator for another fine piece of equipment with about 1/4 of the power. Later on down the line I might switch on over but right now I'm probably pretty set with the rig I have. Unless of course the TFunk's power rating is freakishly low, masking something that could somewhat compare to the power I get out of my CA9. Oh well. :hmm:

seaKamp, prior to owning my T-Funk I have owned MANY different rigs including a Demeter HBP-1/U5/CA9 and an Aguilar DB 750. The T-Funk more than holds its own with everything I have ever had. Do NOT let the power rating mislead you, the T-Funk should be able to get as loud as you could possibly need it...

I would agree with SMASH in that I have had 3 of these myself and the last one I got is noticably more quiet than either of the first 2. SO much so that you have to look for the light to make sure it is even on!!! :eyebrow: I also told Dave that I thought the bottom was tighter, the mids more defined, and the high end a lot sweeter than I remembered on the other 2. He essentially said that is the cumulative result of the tweaking he is constantly doing. Dave has posted here that he is constantly working to improve all the specs of the amp and as a result, the one I just got has all the latest updates including what I believe is a much quieter design. Even the fan on this one seems noticably quieter than the last one....I should point out that I never really had any issues at all with noise on any of the 3 I have had but thought that this may add something to the question of noise. In my opinion, Dave has taken an already good design and made it a lot better by making these refinements...MY hat is off to ya man!! Thanks for giving me the tools to groove!!

Peace,

T

I've got a TFB-550 on the way! I can't wait to try it out.

I'm really interested in comparing it with the AG Tri210L and Schroeder 1210.

I am trying this in place of my AI Focus and I'm sure it's gonna give me more of what I want (though it'll never replace my Trace amps).

I did an AB of the T-Funk and a DB 750 a while back and really got into the EQ section of the T-Funk trying to duplicate the sound of the 750. The one thing I could not do was to get the sense of "size" from the T-Funk. But I could not get the same "clarity and defiinition" from the 750. During the process I tried variations on all 4 bands and overlapping frequencies of the EQ as I went, especially in the 2 center bands, and to me, the latest amp I have seems more open and responsive than the other 2. It is as if there was a thin veil over the speakers before that is no longer there. To quote the man himself here is a bit of an email he sent me when I mentioned this to him...

"Being a studio guy I think you'd appreciate that making the amp quieter is the same as increasing it's dynamics. That's probably what you're hearing at volume.

We run a 24 volt fan at 18 volts. We also start with a low speed fan. They're not real popular so sometimes we can't get them and we use medium speed fans."

I read from that Dave attributes the difference to dynamics due to the lowered noise floor. I don't know what the real reason is, whether it is magic dust  or what, I just know what I hear...and I like it :D

Dave is making the best amp out there right now as far as I am concerned!! Before anybody asks, Yes, I Paid for all 3!!! LOL!

Hope that helps...BTW, SMASH - Thanks for the tip on the Lakland DJ, I picked up a 4 and LOVED it. As a result, I have decided to get the 5!! Thanks alot!!

Peace,

T

Every time I read your posts I want to go out and try one of these beasts out!!!!

BTW, when you say it is all the power that I'll need you are beyond correct. I'd love to try out the TF with my TRI210L!

Tommix, when you use your TF are you only using the TRI210L, or do you run a 12/15/18 along with it?

Is their any possibility that someone who has both WT550 and TFB550 would record some samples and post them? Samples from WT550 would also be cool, as there are some TFB samples at the TF site but I found no WT550 samples online.

burk........I know you have been using the 750 and I can't tell you how surprised I was to get a similar sound out of the T-Funk!! Granted it does not give you the sheer sense of size that the 750 does, but neither will the Eden.....Personally, I would choose the TF hands down......the EQ is definitely more flexible and there is a couple of options on the DI out which is VERY good....YOU can even bypass the preamp and essentially go from the bass itself as a pass through if you want. Dave really nailed it with the 550....Good Luck!!
